Fan cycling is normal. Depending on your power settings, you shouldn't have any fan noise at all though.

Yes variations of the fan speed is normal during different activities on your machine. Can you explain a little further on what is bothering you? :)

I don't know about the thread starter's problem. For me, when at idle (no programs opened and no activity at all), the fan will spin up for a couple of seconds, then stop, then on again and again and again...

I went to tron2^ 's link as he had the same problem. However, he fixed it by flashing the EC back down to 06 from 08. But for me I received the laptop with EC rev 06. Should I flash it to an even older release?

Yea EC08 for the P170 and EC12 for the P150 has fan cycling issues (We posted about it in the BIOS thread). If you are still getting issues with fan cycling with EC06 then I would check your heatsink to make sure its attached properly OR that the thermal paste is applied properly.

The ec06 is a working less noisy at idle version as opposed to the 08 which is what my unit came with from the factory.

The ec08 at idle will hit max fan speed on the cpu and this is unbearable we are talking Fn +1 loudness at idle which is unacceptable. The ec06 version does not suffer from this.

I have the ec06 and bios 1.08 version on my p170HM and it just works. There is a slight fan speed increase at idle but this is definitely normal.

I'm not too worried about it it just that the last laptop I had didn't cycle just had a constant low fan. But if this is normal thing on a p170hm than thats cool
