    Hey all!

I've been doing alot of research on these forums and the rest of the interwebz. I already stated my question in the post title: 'P170hm from AMD 6990m (single link DVI) to Nvidia (dual link DVI). Will it work?'.

Thing is, I've bought myself a WQHD monitor (iiyama XB2779QS) and plugged it in to my DVI connector (which looks like a dual link one) and it gave me no more than 1080p. I now know that the AMD6990m's on the p170hm are not dual link connected and there isn't much I can do about it. The same model laptop came with a GTX580M as well at that time and from what I've read on the forums that one is able to run 2560×1440 resolution when connected to DVI.

The only thing I can't really pin down is this: Is the single link/dual link motherboard wiring any different when you compare an original p170hm->AMD with an original p170hm->Nvidia setup? I'd like to buy an Nvidia card in order to get the dual link to work but I'd like to know if this will solve the single link dvi/dual link dvi issue. Or is it purely the motherboard wiring related (and I shouldn't even bother buying an nvidia card?).

I'm looking for a solution for days now and this is kinda what I've gathered from different threads.

    Thanks in advance! =D

    Alex

There can be some motherboard differences between the two so without direct testing it could be hard to confirm, my guess is that it would work but YMMV.

I e-mailed my notebook supplier and they want to test it for me. Have to bring the monitor though and it's a pretty long drive and they won't do it for free so in doubt. Not sure if I'm going to do it but if I will I'll post an update =). Thanks!

Well let us know your results! As people get more high res displays this is going to become a common question.

I decided not to try this because it would cost me some money and I have to leave both my laptop and the monitor at the notebook retailer. As a frontend dev I can't live a few days without my laptop. Sorry folks! I'd be happy to hear from someone who pulled this off!!

The test should not take too long but I understand if it is a work horse machine.

I bought myself a new gaming rig to fix the problem (months later, had to save money) =). If anyone ever solves this I'd be happy to hear it!
