    Hi everyone,

This is my first post on the forum, but ive been visiting it for several years because of how knowledgable everyone is.
After doing a bunch of research, i'm planning on buying a p170hm for its durability, thinness, and upgradablity.

My question is, how future proof would this system be in terms of component upgrades in the future? Like, if i get a 6990m right now, would i be able to upgrade this video card to a more powerful one in one or two more generations?

In addition, is right now a good time to buy the system in terms of time and performance gain for next genration parts versus price??

    Thanks

If the video card fits into the 6990m slot, then yes. It should be upgradable. It is also very durable, but I'm not as sure what I can say about thinness.

New generations parts are being released all the time, I know ivy bridges come out early next year. If you want to wait, that's fine, but you might find yourself playing the waiting game forever. The current specifications are good enough to run anything for at least the next two years.

Thanks for the response. I mentioned thinness because it seems to be the thinnest notebook that can accomodate a 6990m.

Anyways, is it true that any future video card of the right size wil be compatible? I've read that since video card is on mxm standard, a new mxm version is on its way that will not be compatible (kinda like agp to pci express?)

Actually the thinness would be the P150hm, but not by much at all.

Ok, but what about graphics card upgrade upgradability? Will i be able to put 6 or 7 serieis nvidia gpus (or ati counterparts) into this system when they come out?

that depends on whether or not they continue using the MXM 3.0B slot.

Right now it's all speculation. If the TDP for the slot or the physical form factor has to change and they move away from MXM 3.0b- then no. If they stick with the MXM revision they have now, then it shouldn't be a problem as long as you can get a compatible heatsink (they usually come bundled with one) and flash a new bios to the board.

MXM is owned and run by Nvidia. So it's up to them, whether the current MXM 3.0 is still the standard in 2012.

All we can do it wait.
