I've tried overclocking the 8970m and haven't had any luck so far. I tried the MSI Afterburner method and TRIXX but they seem to cause 3D applications to lock up.
Has anyone here successfully overclocked the 8970m?

How much are you increasing the frequency?
-
If I increase the clock speed by 10mhz 3d applications just freeze and i'm forced to shut down. I've tried the stock Clevo drivers as well as the 13.8 Beta 2 and 13.10 Beta drivers and none of them seem to work. I did uninstall all amd drivers and use Driver Sweeper in Safe mode to make sure everything got deleted and tried different Intel drivers as well.

can you check your voltage under load through gpu-z?
-
That's another thing, GPU-Z crashes when I try to use it. I have HWInfo displaying all that information. Voltage goes up to 1.050 under 3d clocks but i'm unable to see that information after opening a 3d application since it freezes my whole system.

Can you lower the clock ok?
-
Ive overcloking the core to 1100mhz succesfully even getting over 7800 3dmarks, but when I even try to budge the Vram clock, i get black screen in about 5 secs and have to press power button, this, on a p150sm
-
What overclocking tool are you using?
-
Afterburner 3.0.0 beta 14. Since it has the AMD compatibility options
-
I'll give that a try and leave memory clocks alone and see if it does anything for me. Thanks for the tip!
Edit: Are you also experiencing issues with the core clock throttling? It doesn't seem to stay at 900mhz clock for very long. -
Havent checked, but will do. I havent noticed it though
-
nope no throtling
-
edit: nevermind. I too cannot up the memory speed at all. Have benched the core to 1ghz so far. 8970m on p170sm.

You could give asus gpu tweak a go.
-
Will do. Could you pass a link for the program?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Pop asus gpu tweak into google and go to the first real link to the asus website.
-
Trying right now. Will post back.

Cool, i used it for my 7770M due to the clock ranges and voltage control it gave me.
-
Nope, nothing speacial. Same blackscreen after a few seconds after changing mem clock and whole pc freezes.
-

Overclocking is luck of the draw, you may have got a sample that only just passed the required quality for shipping.
-
But seems like nobody has been able to overclock the 8970Ms mem clock.

You could get svl7 to take a look at the vbios for you over at tech inferno.
-
Same issue here, cannot overclock memory clock.
Seems like keeping my old 7970m would've been a better option. I could get the memory clock on that card up to 1500mhz and core up to 950 wthout issues. -
i got a p170sm with the same issue as you guys overclocking the memory let the drivers crash. seems as there will be no solution for this for 2013^^
but i can overclock my gpu up to 1025 and dont get any crashs durings benchmarks (msi kombuster) and games ( dota 2,fifa 14,...) with afterburner 2.3.1 and 13.11 Beta -
Same here, i can overclock gpu core past 1025 but even if i move the memory clock 1mhz it just blackscreens and i have to force shutdown
-
Have you tried "UnofficialOverclockingMode = 2" setting in MSIAfterburner.cfg?
-
Will try on the weekend. will post back
-
Nope. Same as always. Black screen

If you really have money to blow on a new GPU or Laptop you could always try selling your old one on Notebookcheck Marketplace. -

That does seem a little extreme, I ran an EM with a 7970M back in the early days and while I did notice an impact to performance compared to the non enduro 7970M I had with a 2nd gen I7 it was not that bad.

Closer to two years now rather than 1 (about 20 months).

In terms of tech it's ancient, I mean we could go back to talking about the voodoo3 days and games like rollcage if you want but that might not be so relevant

hi guys
I've found two posts that could possibly be interesting
8970M Overclock Help! - Page 2
in the first one has tried to unlock the 8970m in the same way like others did before with the 7970M but the only possibility is flashing the card.
ObscureParadox`s Unigine Heaven - Xtreme Preset score: 1745.75 DX11 Marks with a Radeon HD 8970M
in the second I have found a benchmark result with screenshot which shows a overclocked 8970m ( GPU and Memory ).
someone knows how it works or found another way to overclock the memory sucessful? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
That's a different brand of card.
-
I can edit 7970m or 8970m vbios if someone need
-
So did this 8970M memory overclock issue ever get sorted out? I'm on a 7970M, but curious.

What's the deal with the memory clock on the 8970M, is it locked down from the BIOS front or something?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It seems to have some sort of lock on it, changing the vbios settings should work though.
-
i would like a solution on this
there is another thread in general call 8970m guide or something where someone else is working on this too
-
Yeah there is a limit to the OC possible on the memory clock. I think it's 1375Mhz, I found that this can be unlocked with the latest Afterburner beta. Not sure if setting higher frequency than 1375 would take effect though as I haven't tried it.
Sent from my baked potato -
how?
mine still crashes...
maybe your laptop is lucky,, im using a p150sm and have had no luck -
Ok ok, but what about voltage? i mean you get max mem freq @ stock of ov ? My 7970m go with mem @ 1550 ov(1.1v), and about 1400 with stock(1.0v) and this are the same cards, moded vbios dont work also ?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Your core voltage should not really change your max mem clocks. :/
-
I have also change core freq at specified voltage, the point was to get max performance with no issues. It may be possible to achieve 1,5k @ stock, I really do not know, I have not tried. What i see that 8970m oc worse than 7970m.
