I've tried overclocking the 8970m and haven't had any luck so far. I tried the MSI Afterburner method and TRIXX but they seem to cause 3D applications to lock up.

Has anyone here successfully overclocked the 8970m?

How much are you increasing the frequency?

If I increase the clock speed by 10mhz 3d applications just freeze and i'm forced to shut down. I've tried the stock Clevo drivers as well as the 13.8 Beta 2 and 13.10 Beta drivers and none of them seem to work. I did uninstall all amd drivers and use Driver Sweeper in Safe mode to make sure everything got deleted and tried different Intel drivers as well.

can you check your voltage under load through gpu-z?

That's another thing, GPU-Z crashes when I try to use it. I have HWInfo displaying all that information. Voltage goes up to 1.050 under 3d clocks but i'm unable to see that information after opening a 3d application since it freezes my whole system.

Ive overcloking the core to 1100mhz succesfully even getting over 7800 3dmarks, but when I even try to budge the Vram clock, i get black screen in about 5 secs and have to press power button, this, on a p150sm

I'll give that a try and leave memory clocks alone and see if it does anything for me. Thanks for the tip!

Edit: Are you also experiencing issues with the core clock throttling? It doesn't seem to stay at 900mhz clock for very long.

Overclocking is luck of the draw, you may have got a sample that only just passed the required quality for shipping.

Same issue here, cannot overclock memory clock.

Seems like keeping my old 7970m would've been a better option. I could get the memory clock on that card up to 1500mhz and core up to 950 wthout issues.

i got a p170sm with the same issue as you guys overclocking the memory let the drivers crash. seems as there will be no solution for this for 2013^^
but i can overclock my gpu up to 1025 and dont get any crashs durings benchmarks (msi kombuster) and games ( dota 2,fifa 14,...) with afterburner 2.3.1 and 13.11 Beta

Yeah I'm considering selling this laptop and buying a new one with the GTX 780m. It's still a very good machine though. Do you guys know any places where we can sell besides Ebay and Amazon?

Hmm I wouldnt go that far mate, can you not just upgrade to a 780M in your current laptop?? If I was you I wouldn't bother getting rid of the 8970M, Mantle is coming and its gonna bring good things... plus AMD has partnered with many game developers to improve gameplay. I bought a laptop with a 8970M and I'm really happy with the results, so glad I didin't waste all that extra money for nVidia drivers... meh they need to re-think their ridiculous pricing.

If you really have money to blow on a new GPU or Laptop you could always try selling your old one on Notebookcheck Marketplace.

That does seem a little extreme, I ran an EM with a 7970M back in the early days and while I did notice an impact to performance compared to the non enduro 7970M I had with a 2nd gen I7 it was not that bad.

    hi guys
I've found two posts that could possibly be interesting
    8970M Overclock Help! - Page 2
in the first one has tried to unlock the 8970m in the same way like others did before with the 7970M but the only possibility is flashing the card.
ObscureParadox`s Unigine Heaven - Xtreme Preset score: 1745.75 DX11 Marks with a Radeon HD 8970M
in the second I have found a benchmark result with screenshot which shows a overclocked 8970m ( GPU and Memory ).
someone knows how it works or found another way to overclock the memory sucessful?

What's the deal with the memory clock on the 8970M, is it locked down from the BIOS front or something?

It seems to have some sort of lock on it, changing the vbios settings should work though.

Yeah there is a limit to the OC possible on the memory clock. I think it's 1375Mhz, I found that this can be unlocked with the latest Afterburner beta. Not sure if setting higher frequency than 1375 would take effect though as I haven't tried it.

Ok ok, but what about voltage? i mean you get max mem freq @ stock of ov ? My 7970m go with mem @ 1550 ov(1.1v), and about 1400 with stock(1.0v) and this are the same cards, moded vbios dont work also ?

I have also change core freq at specified voltage, the point was to get max performance with no issues. It may be possible to achieve 1,5k @ stock, I really do not know, I have not tried. What i see that 8970m oc worse than 7970m.
