What would you get? The 9170em with 3610qm 16gb ram, 750gb HDD and a 7970m, or pay a little more for the 370em with 3610qm 8gb ram 750gb HHD and 1 7970m (with potential to go xfire or sli)
I am leaning to the 370em.
what do you all think?

I think it would depend on your budget and what your intention is with the laptop. Is it going to be for gaming only? Will it be a combination of college and gaming? CAD or 3D work?
If it was just for gaming and you intend on replacing your desktop, the P370EM (assuming it is released and not pulled from the market for any reason) may be something to consider.
If you plan on lugging it around with you to college, the P170EM would be a better choice as I can venture only a guess that there will certainly be a weight difference between the 2 machines.
Crossfire and SLI are a bit over-rated as both have some issues with micro-stuttering
Could it benefit you? Maybe. I can tell you it will certainly not be a 100% increase with SLI or Crossfire, you will see performance gains, but the question really is "is it worth the cost?" and that is up to each individual user.
You can get some idea HERE but, this is for a desktop GPU setup mind you. -
370em is substantially larger with a MUCH larger powerbrick. if portability is anything you are taking into account id go with the p170em. however if you go with the 170em you wanna switch it to the gtx 680m cuz enduro ruins the 7970m. enduro is absent in the 370em.

If you order now I'm very tempted to say the 370EM - no sound issues, no Enduro and an option to add another card later on.
That being said, if you have the patience, I think I would suggest waiting a month to see the reviews and what end users are saying about it before purchasing it. People rushed in to buy the 7970M with its price/performance against the 680M, and were left out very disappointed with its gaming performance in the end. So...wait a bit.
If you don't want to wait, I would 100% go for the 370EM if I were you, especially if you plan on ordering the 7970M, as it has a serious under-performance issues in the P170EM but it shouldn't have those with the 370EM, since it won't have that premature Enduro technology. -
Thanks everyone
I have a laptop supplied to me by the school as well... its a mandatory lease, and its a crappy dell. It is fine for the lighter tasks and has software installed by the school. But it is worse than garbage for 3D CAD/CAM software. I will take my new laptop to school on days I need to, then to my co-op every day. How big is a 300W power brick? lol
SLI/X-fire is not a make it, break it deal. But its nice to have options. I prefer the AMD over NVIDIA just for the computation power (better 3D modeling performance/ rendering) I believe.
But i do love me some games too
I have decided to get the P370EM. I can deal with its size, and weight. Offers options to duel cards (as software and/or games demand). Besides that, I have always preferred my girls with a little meat on them
Is there any other reasons for one or the other? I guess a better comparison is the 9170 w/ 680m and the 370 with the 7970m as they are closer in price and both without issues apparently. -
P170EM.
The 7970M is not ready for XFire nor is the 680M for SLi -
cant one of the two cards in CFX/SLI be turned off? or is that an AW thing?
-
im not sure. personally, im just ordering it with a single card. maybe a year before i purchase the other. i may also upgrade the cpu at that point.
-
If you don't need the battery to last more than 1.5 hours, I'd say the P370EM. But if you do use the battery, P170EM will be a better choice. With the correct setting you can squeeze like 3.5-4 hours of the P170EM when doing internet surfing.
-
that is the only good part about this dell. no discrete gpu and xl battery, i get like 9 hrs on it with the screen dimmed. even now with 29% battery i have 2hrs 7min. the battery would be to give me a chance to save my work and power down if the power goes out
even when i was planning on getting the 9170em, power consumption was not a concern of mine. however i do see where battery life can be very important.
i am lucky. at my school, Niagara College, laptops have been integrated into the education system so most classrooms are set up to accommodate laptops; power plugs and ethernet connections.
what about the screen? stick with the matte or go with the glossy? -
When will you have p370em? Do you have the exact time?
-
Definetely order 370EM, it has a lot of improvements compared to any other Clevo. Here is a list below:
1.) Matte LCD bezel
2.) Creative X-Fi MB2 sound software (yay!)
3.) NO enduro and NO optimus! (who needs them on a gaming machine?!)
4.) nice design, borrowed from alienware and asus
5.) touchpad is no longer covered with that sticky rubber finish
6.) all USB 3.0's
7.) audio output/input is on the LEFT side (thats an advantage for me at least)
8.) possible SLI and Crossfire (although its debatable if its worth it at all)
9.) new cooling design (need temps to see how good it is) -
i talked with a sales rep from eurocom, Nick. awesome guys. said if i ordered today they would start the build and ship it on monday so i would get it first week of sept. i will be ordering next week, so probably around the 20th delivered.

Ironically the HD7970M performs slightly better than the GTX680M in some games they tested
P1970EM or P370EM?
