    Any thoughts on this?

My understanding is that, if temps are low, the 780m ramps up to give better performance. As a result, no matter how good the cooling is, Clevo's with 780m's are always going to be pretty warm - thus keeping the fans at fairly high (loud) levels.
What about the 8970m? We know it's pretty much just a 7970m in a new dress, but what about coupling it with the new heatsinks? Does anyone think this could make AMD the option for users wanting a cooler, quieter Clevo? Or, due to the fact the 7970m was always a bit hotter, is it likely to be quite similar?

I understand this is pie in the sky thinking and speculation, and there is very little love for AMD out there unfortunately, but the loss in performance from the 780m to the 8970m doesn't bother me one bit. So I'd definitely be interested in the new 8970m if it was a bit cooler (and not to mention quite a lot cheaper). I understand that the 780m is a higher performing card, but 8970m levels are more than enough for me.

If your heatsink is well machined or lapped, the thermal interface is good and properly applied, you have enough core contact and enough pressure and the cooling system works correctly, your cards are going to be very cool almost regardless of clocks and brand (although the 780m will be hotter than the 8970m).
My 7970m is so cold my fans don't even need to spin up...

Sounds amazing - though I think you'd be hard pressed to find a Clevo user with any tier video card who claims their fans don't even start up :)

Well, I had a p150EM at one point in my hands with a gtx-660m. The card had to stay 4 minutes in furmark before you could hear the fans (it would top out at 67C stock - 83C at 1200/3100)

That's because the 660 hardly deserved the 6 in the middle of its name.
