Has anyone tried using something akin to a dual male -> single female 3.5mm adapter for mixing the subwoofer output with stereo output for better bass? I'd try butchering old cables to test but I have none here at the moment.

What you are trying to do is use the built-in crossover for the subwoofer output + the stereo in order to get more bass.
You dont need that.
Just install THX Pro if you havent, and set your crossover frequency for the stereo output to the desired frequency and boost its DB. -
Where is the crossover setting? Pic?
-
Open up the THX panel.
Click on the first arrow, next to the minimise button.
Select "Settings".
It opens up a selection screen for laptop speakers, headphones and external speakers.
Each of the three has separate crossover settings.
There is a slider with the frequency selection, I recoomend setting it between 50-80hz.
Then, from the Speaker menu, boost the decibels to your desired level.

ok i have tested and compared the line out of my p170em and soundblaster x-fi go pro connected to my denon pma-2010ae and dali mentor menuet (definitely not high end but enough for testing and should be better than most computer sound systems) . i found there is no reduction in quantity of bass from the onboard line out. i have tried playing around with the sliders of thx pro (including crossover) and found that the sound is the same as the x-fi go pro output with all OFF (crystlizer, speaker etc.). with any sound effect activated, you are alterning the original sound signal. and with a nice amp and speakers, nothing is needed to add or adjust.
