    Hi,

my 7970m died. I have two of them in there and I had a thermal problem around a year ago. Turned out that it was a broken heatsink and they replaced it for free. However, the graphics card died now (1 year later), i.e. I need to exchange it. I'm out of warranty.

I have two cards in CrossFireX in there.

    My questions are:

*) If I want to check if the other card still works, can I simply switch them or do I need to reapply thermal paste?
*) I think I have to take out the CPU heatsink to access the second card. Do I have to change the thermal paste there as well in that case?
*) The repair was done at a clevo repair center, however, they only repaired the heatsink. Does that mean that there is additional warranty on it (I guess not, just want to make sure). Im out of the original warranty (12 months) already.
*) Do I have to reinstall the driver in case the 2nd card works? (Since the first driver assumes to have 2 cards in there). I've disabled CrossFireX in the settings already.

    Thanks a lot in advance!

I would change the thermal paste on anything that was removed. It sounds like this hasn't been repasted in a while (ever?)

As to the warranty, you would have to ask Clevo. And it never hurts to ask.

I don't think you should have to reinstall the driver, but.... I could be wrong. Never messed with crossfire and the last SLI system I had (still have it) is a dual Voodoo2 system!

    WAY OFF TOPIC CONTENT:

I have 6 cards I bought off ebay years ago as a bundle. Came with 6 crossover and patch cables too. Only 5 of them work in SLI, but I have two systems running that. One I gave to my son. Retro system FTW!

Of course it's no longer scan line interleave lol.

Just for a quick test you can switch heatsinks but for long term use you should be re-pasting. Any time you remove a heatsink - repaste.

    Hi,

thanks for all the replies! :)

I've realized that I actually have 1 month of warranty left :) (Of course, before removing anything)

I've contacted the Clevo repair center and I've already received a RMA number. I hope that they also cover the graphics card. If they don't, I can still contact my reseller (however, this guy hasn't been very cooperative with my previous problem, so it's going to be hard). The reseller gave me 24 months of warranty which started in Dec 2012, while the Clevo one starts when the Notebook was produced (August 2012).

The GPU should be covered, it's not considered a consumable like the battery for instance.

    Hi,

Ive received my notebook back from the repair center a week ago. They exchanged both GPUs. It works fine again now. It's still weird that apparently both GPUs were broken at the same time. Probably they were just too lazy to check which of them has caused the problems... :p

It was fully covered by the warranty.

    Hi all,

@Arrows , any chance you can let me know how to contact the repair centre.

My supplier has not played fair with me either but if I purchased mine at around the same time you did and if memory serves me right should have the same warranty going for me.

I am hoping you check back and reply soonest else all would be lost.
