Finally took the plunge and bought a an Asus VG248QE. Loving it so far for the 144Hz, colors are a bit meh especially coming from a 90% gamut screen. One issue I've noticed though is that the LCD does not receive any signal before the Win7 login screen (currently connected via mini-DP to DP cable). The entire POST + boot sequence can only be seen on the laptop screen, but not on the external. Did a bit of digging around and apparently this is an inherent feature of the Thunderbolt/mini-DP connection (what???). Anybody have any ideas?

This is true for most digital connections.

My notebook (2 external VGA/HDMI) and desktop (4 monitors DVI/HDMI) also only use one until you're signed on. I think its because they are controlled by Windows software settings for the other monitors which dont kick in until Windows loads.

OK, but I only have one external LCD, and it doesn't run until signed on. Guess that's just the way it is?

Right. Different users can have different display settings configured, so the external output doesn't take effect until you've logged in. Perfectly normal. :)
