    I've recently purchased a P370SM3, 4910MQ @ 4.1Ghz, 980M from Eurocom so a proper machine for once!!

However Temperatures are really bad I thought I'd run firestrike just to test and I'm very glad I tabbed the CPU maxed at 97 and the GPU 92.

Prema BIOS and the Vbios is on the 980m :D

However I'm thinking it may be a dud ? These temperatures aren't right surely.

Also the board reached the same temperature as the GPU I didn't think a board could take 92 Degrees :(

I'm a little worried to use the machine.

Any words of wisdom is appreciated thanks in advance.

I would say yeah, those temperatures are right - laptops run HOT unless you're willing to undervolt and underclock them like I am. You could turn HyperThreading off too.

Wich thermal paste eurocom apply? You may want to repaste yourself...
Also you can disable in bios CPU turbo mode, you will lose at least 5 degrees and you will not notice any decrease of performance while gaming.

Oh ok What sort of temperatures do you get Darcoder as I can see you have a very similar machine to mine.

I'm going to repaste and reseat both of them with IC Diamond.

Get Gelid GC Extreme... it will be less messy to remove in the future and you'll get slightly better performance...

...slowly but surely being dethroned by thermal grizzly kryonaut ;) but yeah, i still have a tube each of ICD, GCE, now TGK and CLU, of course.... :D could be wise to also get a large tube of some cheap stuff for quick testing purposes...

How much paste do I need to apply to both of the chips as the IC Diamond will arrive tomorrow./

I'm guessing a cross on the gpu and a pea size on the the CPU?

cpu is a rectangular naked die so i would recommend a thin line across the center of the die. the gpu is a square shaped die so id say a rice-seed sized drop in the center should do :)

Technically you are correct of course as a square is just a special case of a rectangle.

Cpu i got 69 max without turbo. If i remembered with turbo i got 85 with oc. ( i74900qm)
    Thermal paste is CLiquidUltra.
Gpu depending on the game i got max between 67 and 73 with fan max and not oc gpu. Thermal paste is ic7diamonds.

About application, on my alienware i was trying each methods and my best results was actually applying in the whole core. we can say it is hard to apply with ic7 but easier if you warm it a bit inside hot water ;)
The risk i didnt like with a nuts or line is that some part of the core may not be covered. i always advise to fit it yourself the full core with a minimal quantity, till you dont see the core. Then the pressure with heatsink will remove if you put a bit too much in the corner so for a next repaste, you know if you put enaugh or not :)

I don't think the P37Xsm has a very robust cpu heatsink. My i7 4800mQ set to 3.9ghz on all 4 cores runs at 98-99C under max load. I managed to get temps down to 92C with a liquid metal repaste.

You're OCing it and it's running at that frequency even at those temps?

Using XTU, by undervolting the chip, I can increase the maximum current draw and still stay within the 47W hardware limited TDP. It won't thermal throttle until it hits 99C. With Liquid Metal and max temps at 92C, it won't thermal throttle, but that temp is still kind of insane for such a buclky laptop and a relatively mild OC and 47W TDP.

If everything is stock, under full load, the chip runs at ~86C - which is also insane. I really don't think the cpu cooler is up to par in this laptop - especially considering this laptop supports unlocked cpu's with 55W TDPs that can be raised in XTU.

By comparison I had a i7 920xm set to a TDP of 100 Watts, and under full load at 3.5ghz it never went above 82C in my M17xR2. (That's twice the power draw, and similar die size, but considerably lower temps.) The M17xR2 cpu heatsink had larger heatpipes, and a larger radiator with considerably more fins - it feels that the cpu heatsink on the p37Xsm's was kind of an afterthought - especially considering how effective the gpu coolers are.

hm maybe u dont have proper flat contact between the heatsink and die. might consider lapping the heatsink contact surface :) repasting with metal paste surely is a nice improvement already. also try and increase airflow by propping up the machine and beware of high ambient temps :p also, what kinda stress test are u using to get your cpu to 99 / 92C?

I had TERRIBLE results in my notebook with grizzly vs IC diamond and liquid ultra :/

Two options on this machine really, grab a 370EM machine heatsink set to get the extra CPU cooling (slave GPU will run a bit hotter) or go to town on the tweaking and aim for around 3.7-3.9ghz on the core with the perfect paste application and a decent heatsink sample.

Surely they can't sell these machines if they thermal throttle?

I'm shocked by this seems I've once again bought the wrong laptop for my needs :p

Can you link me towards a place to get a new 370EM heatsink.

I just don't see this laptop working if the CPU is hitting 96 degrees at 3.5Ghz within seconds.

Im praying the repaste solves my problems

My system now is a 4910mq at stock (removed the overclock the previous person had on there)

    Stock 980M.

Running firestrike they both thermal throttle. However I'm hoping it's just a repaste job at least I'm hoping.

It's a good sign if you guys are saying my temperatures aren't normal I was ****ting myself for awhile.

well the top three nonmetal pastes i can recommend are IC Diamond / Gelid GC Extreme / Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut (in order of incresing thermal performance, whereas GCE and TGK are almost head to head with a slight edge for the latter)

top metal based i would say is coolaboratory liquid ultra, its the easiest to apply and still has identical performance to, say, Phobya liquid metal or CL pro. the latter two are WAY too fluid for my taste though, already had issues with PLM dripping all over the place after application *ugh*

so yeah, im using CLU on my cpu (delidded with clu both under and above the IHS) and kryonaut on my gpu and must say its the best paste job / lowest temps ive had to date on my dark knight :) so gonna stick to it for the next 6-12 months now :p

im sure repasting will solve the thermal throttling in firestrike :) keep us updated here!

Or do you think I'll return to normal load temperatures.

    CPU - 80-85

    GPU - 60-70

No mate that's not my temperatures that's what I'm hoping for.

Currently running firestrike CPU maxes at 98 and gpu at 92 due to nvidia safety which is good.

However I'm hoping to achieve the temperatures mentioned

Yah something is wrong, do a repaste and if the temps don't come down contact whoever you bought it from because thats crazy high temps, I have 4810mq and 2x980m's with auto fans and using Unigine Valley benchmark highest settings possible running for over an hours both my gpu temps were around 68-72 and my cpu temps were even lower with all cores being 100% utilized and 100% utilization on both 980m's also......I haven't ran firestrike in a while so if I have time I will get it agian and see what my temps are with that

aaaah ok! well, the first thing to do is definitely do a proper repaste. just to be sure and get a feeling for a good paste job, repeat this 2 or 3 times and recheck temps each time.

thatll give u a clue as to what the culprit is... paste job, thermal paste, dust accumulation, ambient temps, heatsink contact, air flow....etc

Yah well don't know what else to say besides there is something wrong because that is not "normal" so once you put new thermal paste on if you are still have problems contact the seller and get a refund or RMA or whatever because that is deff not what happens to my laptop

The day of truth is upon us!!!! Right so temperatures are all sorted with the repaste

Thinking benchmarking the cpu maxed out at like 80 degrees.

    GPU 72 Degrees.

But now I've got a weird problem when benching firestrike the screen will go completely blue like a hard crash PC remains on fans and everything but have to reset the whole pc :(

Right I've sorted out the CPU temperatures now they max out at about 80 which is fine.

Now my GPU was running perfectly temperature wise now all of a sudden it's getting to 88 degrees :( There's something not quite right here.

Or do I need to keep getting the paste warm so it spreads?

can you elaborate on "quite a bit not covered" on the gpu part? are u sure ure bolting down the screws on the gpu heatsink tightly and that it makes proper contact?

    I've done a repaste,

Put a large pea size blob. Placed the heatsink done and tighten as much as I physically could.

GPU on it's own load it's like 67-75 degrees which is fine.

It's just when running firestrike demo where it's pushing the CPU/GPU to their maximum gpu reaches like 88 degrees.Does it take time for IC Diamond to adjust with heat overtime?

Nope, IC Diamond has a very low curing time and even pastes that have a very long curing time would have like a 2-5c max temp difference, not 12c+ like you are probably hoping for.

Honestly, I just undervolt my CPUs and GPUs to keep my temps under 70c and when gaming under 60c.

fan spinning properly? heatsink pipes leaky? dust accumulation in heatsink fins and/or fan blades / fan casings?
