hey guys, so i have seen out there that some have mentioned the option for the 1440p ips panel for the P640RE. does anyone know where i can buy just the panel itself if i wanted to do an aftermarket upgrade?

Assuming compatibility is there, sure - but consider how doing so might impact your warranty.

Do you have any sources (as in where you've heard/read about said screen)? Maybe even the make and/or model of the panel?

Unfortunately there's no service manual yet (which lists the part nrs.), but there's only 4 panels that match and 2 of those are 'IPS', being LGs (the AUOs using AHVA, which accomplishes the same thing, really). The Metabox listing claims 'matte', which leaves the AUO B140QAN01.1 or the LG LP140QH1-SPB1.

Now, if they are strictly listing IPS-IPS then it's the LG, which is a fairly mediocre-to-poor panel. Considering the surcharge it's effin' terrible. The AUO may fare better, but there's no review of that yet. Either is offered on ebay as a replacement lcd for the ThinkPad X1 Carbon (not too impressive, either).

Would stick with either one of the 1080p's for now and maybe upgrade later on when the possible options, including future models, have been out for a while and reviewed. This makes a comparison with the fhd possible, beyond mere pixel count, and prices will have dropped considerably. Be aware that this upgrade needs a different lcd cable as well, so take into account an extra $25 for this. Of course, you could recuperate part of that by selling the old fhd cable (not to mention the lcd).

I would also wait until you can get some solid reviews on any 1440p panels you plan on using.

A 1440p panel will be sharper (due to increased pixels) but it might be worse in every other way. Besides which, 1080p should be plenty on a 14" display. 1440p is overkill IMO on such a small screen.

I would personally be more interested in other aspects of a panel (G-SYNC, refresh rate, colour gamut, colour accuracy, brightness) rather than resolution on a 14" display.

My Yoga 2 Pro has the QHD/3K screen, and I hate it. The only ultra-high-resolution notebook I would ever consider buying is a Mac.

1080p is pretty dense on these displays, I agree that the other metrics are very important.

Development of 14" panels will continue as it's becoming a bit more popular.
