It doesn't always happen but usually when I start a game while my laptop is unplugged, even if it's fully charged, it suddenly turns off and it won't turn on again unless I plug the charging cable back into the laptop before turning it on again.
It runs fine on battery but as soon as I start a game it just turns off.
Has anyone encountered this before or have any idea on what it could be?

Something is triggering a safety shutdown whether a cap is going bad or a solder is failing is hard to determine w/o looking at it and tracing the power system with a multimeter. The system seeing sufficient power from the PSU before turning on again seems to be resetting the "breaker" into allowing you to boot up again. Could be something as simple as a bad CMOS battery causing it to require the PSU to be plugged in
dGPU is killing the power due to insufficient power being supplied by the battery alone.
Depends mostly on what GPU you're running for gaming if the power draw is too much for battery alone it will cause the system to crash. The whole not turning on w/o the PSU plugged in though makes me lean more towards a power issue rather than GPU power draw.

Thanks for the input! The GPU I'm running is a 970M. I've run OpenHardware and I saw that the max it drew was 50+W but usually it's in the 30's.
Also, I forgot to mention this, if I use it at 80% (for example) and it shuts down, when I turn in it back on the battery is still at 80%. It's also weird because sometimes it's ok, sometimes is not. Sometimes if the plug gets removed accidentally when playing, it runs fine but sometimes it just turns off. Really annoying to find what's wrong because of the inconsistency. -

Some of the threads might give insight. Due to the # of pages of 970M responses it might be time to consider a different GPU if you don't find a resolution to fix the power issue. -

You could use Nvidia inspector to limit the clocks on battery.
