Hi guys. I've narrowed down my search to a P650HS-G. I was thinking about purchasing from Eluktronics (cheaper on Amazon) but with all this talk of overclocking/undervolting I discovered the Prema BIOS. The HID Website (for the P650HS) states "Prema Custom BIOS - Latest Updated Version once available - Contact us for details." I've seen another thread here stating that the BIOS isn't yet available. I've emailed HID and the reply I got was that the BIOS is under beta testing and will be released in the "near future." That could mean anything. So my question is why go with HID and/or any overclocking CPU if you can't manage it in the BIOS. And there is no real guarantee the Prema BIOS will ever be released for this model. I don't care too much about overclocking, but I do want to undervolt and having to do it within Windows would be less than optimal as opposed to doing so in the BIOS. I also like the ability to disable SATA drives from within the BIOS as opposed to unplugging them.

Edit: If I have the i7 7820 (unlocked) can I overclock/undervolt it in the standard Clevo BIOS?

    Thoughts?

You can overclock this CPU but for now Prema is still working for RS and HS P6XX. I had Prema BIOS system before and even with locked CPU there been benefits... I would take P650 from Prema partner like mentioned HID and then flash BIOS when it will be available...

You do get basic controls under the normal firmware.

Very, very, very basic controls. The Bios is severely neutered. I was very disappointed with the lack of decent options. Sad really. I got mine from Sager but as I learned a lot of the clevo branded laptops come with the dumbed down version of a bios..... if you can even call it that.

Maybe I'm reviving an old thread, but are there any news about a mod version fo the BIOS for this Laptop? I bought a Clevo version (from laptop plus) some months ago and I'd like to have more available options for checking (even though I'm not planning to do any overclock or undervolt of any kind).

I am also interested - especially since there ought to be some news about an update addressing firmware fixes regarding Meltdown.

I asked awhile back and have not received any feedback from prema on a bios as of yet. Would be nice to have some control over my own laptop.

I think I'll give HIDevolution a call in the near future. If I learn anything of value I'll report back here.

Talked to Don@HIDevolution and no good news - BIOS still not available and while he was apologetic there doesn't seem anything they can do to speed up the process. At least it is expected and we're not the only ones waiting - hopefully not until our machines become obsolete...

@Xanthira So I asked Prema and the current status it is still undergoing testing. Better wait than rush to get a fully tested BIOS that works perfectly for everyone.

I run Linux (as my avatar may suggest) and finally applied the microcode update that got pushed through Debian / Ubuntu a while ago. Since then, I have had kernel page faults every few hours - even though emerging problems with that patch where supposedly restricted to pre-Haswell. Turns out that I am not just imagining things:

    https://www.theverge.com/2018/1/18/16904726/intel-meltdown-spectre-fix-higher-reboots

Fortunately, on Linux, I can just revert the patch. I believe on Windows the microcode resides strictly with the BIOS (but I don't know much about how things work there) and this would suck for anybody who has done a good-faith update.

Moral of the story for me: I am now happy to wait with newly invigorated patience until @Prema feels confident that things truly work!

This level is kept to the BIOS level yes so it should not impact windows users.
