Hey everyone,
I am trying to replace my 3 year old laptop with 660m.
I am thinking of
P650SG with 4720hq and 980m
or
P750ZM with 4790K and 970m
What do guys think? I just want to make sure that my money is well spend since I will be using this new laptop for at least 3 years.
Thanks!

The difference between the two comes down to a few factors like battery life, optimus, size, weight, heat, performance.noteless likes this. -
I edited my op, lets just say if I can afford one or the other. Will it be better to go with P650SG with 980m or is P970ZM worth extra cash with 970m instead of 980m?

P970ZM would give you the ability to upgrade the video card at a later date if you were so inclined, so that might factor in to your decision.

Well, the P650SG might be better for gaming, since the GPU is generally more of a factor there (assuming you can't afford the 980M upgrade for the P750ZM). The P650SG will also be ~2 pounds lighter, and have more than double the battery life (~4 hours compared to 2 if you are lucky in the P750ZM). However, if you are doing anything that takes a lot of CPU power, a P750ZM with an i7-4790K will handily beat the i7-4720HQ found in the P650SG. Also, the P750ZM has the option to upgrade just about every component down the road, the P650SG is basically limited to RAM and storage (HDD/SSD) upgrades.
If portability and battery life aren't concerns, the P750ZM might be the better choice. However, if those factors are important for your usage scenario, then the P650SG will probably be more practical.SystemXS and ShadowedIce like this. -

Just so you are aware the 980M is about 30% faster than the 970M so that's how much faster the P650SG will be in games. Also top end cards are around $730, so factor that into your costings if you intend to upgrade the ZM in the future.

Hum, i would go for the P650SG, even if the CPU is not as good as a desktop, it's still pretty powerfull, and won't get you bottlneck on most usage scenario, but the 970m will surely bottleneck you in 2-3 years ( depending if you like your games only on ultra or not ^^)
Plus, the weight, the battery life !.
And as meaker said, the MXM GPU upgrade cost an arm AND a liver.....i personally bought my P150SM with the intend to replace later the GPU, but the price is................a "bit" too much

The 970M is not so bad for machine like yours though.

Whats your usage needs OP?
If you the machine's primary purpose is gaming then you probably want to grab the P650SG. The P7xxZM series are desktop replacements and will make fine gaming machines, however to get the same gaming performance as the P650SG you will have to pay a premium.
I love computer hardware so it is a no-brainer for me to grab a P7xxZM as it will allow me to do the most stuff with it, now and in the future, thanks to the upgradeable components and desktop CPU. However, that desktop CPU is not necessary to play games unless you NEED ridiculously high frame rates.
edit. Both machines will be money well spent, regardless of which you choose. -
Haha, looks like you and I are in the same predicament, OP
Anyway, copying a couple of lines from my thread, which is basically the pros of each laptop:
P750ZM: Better Desktop CPU, Dedicated GPU (No Optimus hassle), Possibility to upgrade
P650SG: Better GPU, More compact/portable and lighter, Better Battery Life
I'm undecided right now too, but I'm leaning ever so slightly towards the P650SG, since it's better suited for carrying around in university. Good luck on whatever you decide! -

For uni the extra time away from the plug is a big benefit along with the weight.

I considered getting the P750ZM with the 4790k and a 980m but decided that a lighter thinner laptop with better battery time made more sense. I don't see any sense in not buying the top of the line GPU now as that is a very costly part to upgrade. If youre looking to upgrade it in the future your almost halfway towards buying another P650SG or whatever the latest new model is when the time comes. If you're starting out with the 970m just to get the P750ZM I think you've already made a expensive mistake.

Well with the P6xx series the GPU is soldered so upgrading is not an option.

The reason I got the P750ZM. It was a tough decision but upgrade ability was important. Something you don't normally get with a notebook.

Haha! I see you grabbed my sig and adjusted it! Looks good! -

You borrowed the "HQ" designation from his mobile CPU too, where as yours is the unlocked "K" desktop type
