So, I got a laptop from notebookguru recently (germany) and now it started overheating.
Its an I7-6700 with 24GB of ram and a 970m nvidia. I play some lighter games like WOW and LOL and do statistics and data sim in R (hence the RAM needed).

It has the best cooling paste available and all the vents are clear. Today it shut down so i decided to ask around.
I was playing a game (League of Legends) and listening to youtube in the background and the screen just went black. I repeated the process using CPU-temp and saw that it gets SUPER high if I game and watch youtube at the same time. It seems that they both just hog the core1
Now this is a top end laptop, this shouldnt be happening. I had no issue doing this on an i3 6GB lenovo with an nvidia 530m.

Anyone this happened to before? What could be the cause? All help appreciated.

100+ celsius according to CPU temp. The CPU temp icon gets red and soon after it shuts down.

There is something definitely wrong. No way should the CPU get that hot under normal usage. Is the fan working? You can monitor/test this with HWInfo64.

You should start with the repast even if it worked fine until now

At times, the factory applied thermal paste sucks, many people here recommend repasting yourself with IC Diamond (good for beginners, easy to apply and effective) as soon as you get the notebook shipped.

So hwinfo doesnt show the fan icon, apparently its not supported.
It came with arctic silver paste.
Although I have some fan-control software that came with the laptop. Im using custom fan speed now, so it goes max at 75 C.
Cant find how to upload a list but here 98 C max on all cores....

Seconded. LoL and a web browser shouldn't result in temps that high.

This is not normal at all. Time to send it back for repair or dig into it yourself.

75 C is great, but you shouldn't need to max the fans to achieve that unless you're really pushing the system. Reconsider the paste (AS 5 is decent, but there are much better options) and see how well the application is. If a repaste doesn't help, I'd contact your reseller if I were you.

98 is way too high. Get that serviced or at least repaste ASAP.

I should add that if re-pasting doesn't work, I would also check the heatsink assembly itself.
I've witnessed a Lenovo tech accidentally bend an anchoring arm of a T450 HSA, screwing it back do did nothing obviously since the mounting pressure has decreased significantly.

Also, artic silver is good 5 years ago, in this day and age, there are many pasts that are better and cheaper than AS5.

I think he meant that he has the fan profile setup to go to max fans blowing when it hits 75c and the GPU still hits 98c.

    Yes
I repasted but its still the same after 24 hours of use, the advertised "break in".
The laptop doesnt FEEL hot though. Faulty sensor?

If the heatsink is too hot to the touch, then no. Otherwise it's possible.

I had this issue a few months back. I found out after I serviced the laptop the technician that was working on my laptop didn't screw the cpu block down properly. So I did a full cleaning of all the heat sinks, repast and made sure to screw all the screws properly. Now no more overheating and I can OC the gpu.

Yeah, if the heatsink is made to sit at an angle it will be useless.

Welcome to clevos crap cooling solutions.

It's likely that something doesn't sit properly, it's the common thing for clevo. They don't like having their pipes and plates touch the die 100%, they would rather put in huge fans and tiny plates with a couple of heatpipes so that the system is as loud as possible and doesn't cool down that well.

Start working on your fits then u'll get good temps.

I wouldn't go that far, a repaste will likely be sufficient, since it will both put better compound on it (I recommend a more viscous paste like IC Diamond) and allow you to re-secure the heatsink/screws.

He did repaste, still 100c. Lapping is in order to fix this mess.

Or go back to the reseller and get their help before doing anything drastic.
