Recently, the mainboard in my Clevo P750DM2G died. I replaced it with a P750DM3G board from eBay. This has exhibited a really odd problem.

When I took possession of the DM2G machine, it had 32 GB RAM (2x16GB 2666) fitted in bays 1 and 2 (under the keyboard). I bought identical modules (Corsair Vengeance) to take the machine up to 64 GB and this was working fine throughout. The memory has been used fully at various points, and has previously passed memtest runs so I don't think there's any issue in the modules.

The replacement board seems to be only able to bring up the BIOS screen and boot with 32 GB RAM; the only bays that seem to work for this are 1 and 3. Any other configuration fails to bring up the BIOS logo and the machine seems to keep cycling through the BIOS stage (it powers up, keyboard lights up, fans spin up and then go to low RPM; after 30-60 seconds the machine power cycles - the screen is black the whole time).

Has anyone seen or heard of something like this before?

EDIT: 2600 was a typo; those modules are labelled as 2666

check and see if the problem persists with one single RAM stick in all four slots. if that is still the case, then:

    1) your replacement mobo might be defective at the two RAM slots
    2) either your CPU IMC or your socket or your CPU to socket connection might be wonky, hindering the RAM to function properly

1 and 3 would be single channel, does one stick only in either 2 or 4 work?

Try resetting the bios and see if it'll train.

So I raided a couple of other machines for their 2400 RAM (2x16 GB modules, 1x8 GB). These modules so far seem to work in any slot and combination. I guess the current board is very fussy about the 2666 RAM. Is there perhaps a way to make the 2666 memory work, or is a fussy board likely just to be permanently problematic.

Eventually, my plan is to take the 6700K in the system and replace it with a 9700K - I don't know if that will have any bearing on the memory situation.

EDIT: Same typo as in original post. 2600 should have been 2666

The stronger memory controller can help but it depends.

just to be clear: are we talking about actual 2600 sticks or 2666 and ure just keep saying its 2600 "class"? that might be important cuz ive noticed before in some instances that the mobo is fussy about using non-standard speeds, i.e. there is no standard speed between 2400 and 2666 mhz for so-dimms. so anything in between those would mess up the system.

Apologies - it's labelled as 2666 memory. This is where I'm up to at the moment in terms of working configurations :

    Bay 1 and 3 (16 GB 2666) : total of 32 GB RAM
    Bay 1 and 2 (16 GB 2400) and Bay 3 (8 GB 2400) : total of 40 GB RAM
    Bay 1 and 2 (16 GB 2400) and Bay 3 (8 GB 2400) and Bay 4 (16 GB 2666) : total of 56 GB RAM
    Bay 1 and 2 (16 GB 2400) and Bay 3 (16 GB 2666) and Bay 4 (8 GB 2400) : total of 56 GB RAM

    It's really strange.

Have you made sure the bios is up to date?

Did you check with your reseller? I don't memorize the different versions for all the machines.

The board vendor was surprised that the original system shipped with 2666 memory. The system builder (Origin) has no interest in supporting me because I'm the second owner of the system, so wouldn't help (even though I got the system essentially new from the original owner who didn't need it - something that irritates, to be honest).

The system seems to be working and I'm not terribly concerned, just confused.

Second owner or not they should provide firmware on request, if not that's a bit shocking.

They claim they never updated from the original firmware but also said that there is zero support for anyone other than the original owner. That’s been their policy for quite some time it seems.

So long as it has a sager serial we will give out firmware on request. The DM3 had updates from what I remember.

Yeah; I'm not sure I'd buy from Origin given their policy. From my perspective, the vendor has their money from the original purchaser, so have been paid for the support. Disowning the machine because it changed hands seems pretty low. it is not a given that the second owner is any more or less responsible/careful than the first owner.
