P751DM-G Loss of Power

Hi,

When playing CS GO, WoW and Golf with Friends my power adaptor shuts off, the laptop then runs on the internal battery(along with the throttling for power saving). The games are running on High settings.

I can get the power adaptor to work again by replugging it back into the wall. I then play for a little while and it might happen again 10-30mins later if playing any of those games.

I bought a new identical power adaptor, because I thought it was the culprit, yet the problem still persists. I stop the problem happening in WoW and CSGO by reducing the settings to Low-Medium, as such, I haven't had the problem reoccur. However, I would like to fix the issue as preferably I'd like to play some other games without being limited to low settings.


I ran heaven 4.0 and 3D Mark, they both ran through entire cycles for 20mins with no trouble. I ran AIDA64 with GPU stress and no troubles. However, I ran AiDA64 with CPU and FPU stress and the problem happened.

I somehow don't think this is a GPU problem.

Any ideas? Could a faulty wall socket cause the issues or am I looking at a CPU/mobo problem? Or perhaps I'm very unlucky and my replacement power adaptor was also faulty?

Either way, I don't have any spare parts to swap in and out. If the consensus is a hardware problem , then I'm up for an out of warranty repair.

Specs: i5 6600k, 980M, 480 SanDisk SSD, 8GB RAM, 230W Power Adaptor, 1080p display.

 

Any overclocking settings or anything you have changed recently?

 

Which 3Dmark?

Give Superposition 1080p Extreme a run for GPU isolation

Give Cinebench R20 a run and Prime95 26.6 Blend a run to see how the CPU responds

 

Ran Prime 95 to 10 tests, no issues.

Ran Superposition 1080p Extreme, lots of tearing right off the bat max fps 14 with consistently running at below 10. Power Adaptor went off within 30 sec. To double check, i stopped Super1080p Extream running, replugged the Power Adaptor back into the wall to turn it back on, then reran Extreme again...this time the whole laptop powered off within 1min..

In which case, looks like it Superposition may have found the culprit... the GPU?

I've rerun Prime 95 again for 10 tests just to be doubly sure. No issues again, so it is really looking like my 980M is tired, at least on things of high settings. Does this indicate a software issue, hardware failure or heat? Before it poowered off the temps were solid at 60 degrees celsius, that to me doesn't seem too bad.

Nope, no overclocking( because i havent really needed to) nor settings change.

 

Definitely sounds like your GPU is giving up the ghost. You definitely wouldn't be the first to have a stock 980m fail on a clevo.

Superposition 1080p extreme basically gets you to the fail point quicker then the less taxing games that take 10-30 minutes to realize.

You can replace it with another 980m, 970m if you're on a budget or maybe go 1060/1070.

 

Hello, thanks for the quick reply. I am actually so relieved to have confidence this is the GPU and not any of the other components. From what i've read, looks like the 1060s have some troubles in the P751DM-G, they aren't just plug and play - although i may be wrong. I'm going to stick with the 980M i think. It does everything i need and they are much cheaper than they were when i got this lappy.

I remember a while back seeing a Thermal Pad guide, would you happen to know a good source of info for the reapplication? Any recommendations from experience about which pads/paste to use
