    P775TM vs P870TM (and my old P170EM)

    Hi all,

I've been looking at both P775TM and P870TM (for a i7-8700k or similar, GTX 1070, 17" 120+ Hz FHD build), and I like the look of the P775TM better, but the P870TM seems like it might perform better. However, both look like they're rubber/plastic.

What I will miss is the aluminum palm rest and lid of my old P170EM from 2012. It kept it feeling cool to the touch all the time, and prevented fingerprints and grease from showing. And even if it did get warm under high load, it wasn't sweaty-warm. I'm worried that with the newer models, the palm rest will feel like warm plastic/rubber under my hands, and I'll just be sweating on it all the time.

Am I over thinking this? Will the P775 be just fine (not like I'm using a GTX 1080 with a i9-9900k and 4k display) or would the P870 still be better? Does the palm rest feel cool, despite being plastic/rubber?

Are there alternatives out there I might like? (I've heard MSI Titan mentioned, but I'm not sold on that) I want a powerful and capable laptop, but I really want to feel comfortable using it.

    Thanks for the help!

if theres a redesign chance on the 18" for a socket 8 core cpu in the MSI titan 83+ then i'd wait for that one.

using 8 cores cpu in P775 might be difficult due to heat, unless u are okay running at ~4.3ghz non turbo boost.

The P870TM has better cooling. The palm rest on either should be cooler than the P170EM since rubber/plastic is more insulative than aluminum.

Can't speak for the P775, but the P870 palm rests stay quite cool. You will get a warm spot under the keyboard where the M.2 SSDs are, but its not too bad.

I believe the P870 has better cooling in general than the P775, especially for the GPU as you can use the massive vapour chamber with a single GPU, but either of them will cool properly (but they need a few modifications). I'd highly suggest buying from HIDEvolution if you go for one of these as you can get them to do the cooling mods such as a delid, thermal pad replacement, liquid metal application et cetera, along with a Prema BIOS. If not, be prepared to do those jobs yourself to get the most out of your machine. If you are going for the 8700k, as a minimum you will need to delid the CPU as it will usually reduce the temps by 10 degrees or so. If you get the 9900K it will run hot regardless of what you do on either a desktop or a laptop.

Get the WT75, GT 75, GT 73 or Asus Chimera. Way more premium than clevo turdbooks.

    thank me later

Thanks, would you say that a i7-8700k that's been delidded and undervolted by HIDEvolution, paired with a GTX 1070 and FHD display, needs the P870 and vapor chamber cooling, or would a P775 be plenty capable of keeping that cool and comfortable? I wouldn't want performance drops due to temp throttling, either, but is that a concern with this build in either case?

Thanks, I'll check them out. Part of the reason I like Clevo is because they are understated. So many laptops exaggerate the gaming look, when I prefer something a little more clean cut and not overly lit up, logoed or "edgy" in appearance.

A P775 from HIDEvolution will be fine, especially with a 1070. A 1070 probably doesn't even need the vapour chamber unless you are overclocking it, but lower temps are always better imo. With the P775 you may not be able to overclock the CPU as far as with the P870, and it will run hotter if you ever upgrade to the 1080, but HIDEvolution's thermal mods will help significantly. The main issue with Clevos is the stock BIOS/firmware which power/current limit throttles under heavy load, but the Prema BIOS will fix that. Which one you get depends mainly on your usage: if you are gaming, then either system will be fine. If you plan on rendering or something CPU intensive then the P870 would probably be better.

The WT75 is way more expensive than the Clevo options, and pointless unless you need a Quadro GPU.

Having used both P870 (DM and DM3) and P170 as my main machines I much prefer the rubber feel of the P870 and its still looking pristine on both, very hard wearing and easy to clean. The metal surfaces on the P170 would be feel too cold on winter mornings and could get warm enough to make my hands sweaty. The P870 wrist rest would get only a bit warm when I had 2.5" 7200rpm drives in there and after a while with two gpus going full bore.

It's plenty sturdy enough with zero flex. I think it's a rubber finish on something stronger.

Lack of metal can also help avoid condensation when it's very cold :)

i would go for P870TM 8700k with prema bios through a reputable prema partner, so you can upgrade to 8 core or possibly 10 cores cpu in the future. 9900k 8 core is already tested and working in it, 10 core comet lake next year is a rumor at this point.
