    Hi,

Was messing around inside my laptop with CPU. Needed to remove shim from ihs which was almost welded on. Tapped it off with screwdriver and hammer (sounds an absolutely foolish thing to do in hindsight ).

Repasted everything and laptop will noew not work.

    Symptoms.

Press power button - only power circle light comes on (hard drive light does not flicker) keyboard lights up and rear lid lights come on.

There is silence and black screen for 33 seconds and then fans go on for 64 seconds still with black screen and nothing happening and then laptop shuts off.

I feel really foolish. Does anyone know what it could be. Perhaps ive dislodged something i may be overlooking. I have reseated my 4 ram sticks. Removed battery. Removed cmos and removed both 1080 grfx cards and reseated them.

    Can anyone help ?

    Kind regards

    Chris (uk)

Open your CPU, look for any scratches etc. Make a picture of it and upload it here, maybe we can find something, but yeah it's likely you scratched something u shouldn't have.

When the shim popped off ihs it landed on top of these components on motherboard in between 2 fans

I mean the actual CPU die. Not the IHS, you removed it with a screwdriver and hammer right?

Hi. No the cpu had been delidded by myself last year. The copper shim was stuck on top of the ihs. So i put a flat tip screwdriver next to the shim and tapped it away from ihs. It landed on the components on the board in between the 2 gpu fans. I thought nothing of it as everything was powered off

Alright, now I get the picture.
Clean the LM from the CPU die and check if it has some cracks.

Quick question if you have the experience. Ive got Prema bios. What is the newest CPU i can replace this 6700K with that would work in my P870 dm3 ?

There is a BIOS running around that would enable you to get a 8700K running, personally I would not go for that route because of the stress on the VRM's and thermal issues when overclocking, however a 8700 non K would be absolutely perfect I'd say, if you want to go that route.

Other than that Prema woud allow up to 7700K as far as I remember.

I'm not even entirely sure why you would "chisel" a shim away while mounted. Actually I'm really confused as to why you would need a shim for the CPU in the first place, since CPU heatsinks usually are rather tight, the issues where people need a shim is normally on the GPU side.

Yeah. About a month ago i decided to shim cpu as well just to see what the effect was. I already had both the gpu's shimmed. My temperatures for all 3 have been terrible over this period so i was going to revert back to before. Zero shims and conductonaut all round. The bloody shim wouldnt come off the ihs. It was almost welded on.

A moment of madness. I genuinely tapped the shim off with the feintest tap and it did this much damage. Every days a learning day

I guess ive gotta take my medicine on this one....

You can likely find some 2nd hand 7700k chips going for a good price.

Seeking some advice as i can feel it running away with itself again (my spending that is )

Ive pretty much decided on getting a i7 7700k. A couple of options are
    Option 1
the der bauer extreme edition guranteed to 5ghz delidded with 99% silver ihs etc which would be about £477.
    Option 2
Their lesser edition which is guaranteed to 5ghz and is delidded but with the standard ihs £396

    Option 3
Bog standard i7700k running the lottery of getting a crap one from somewhere uk based (req me to delid myself etc which is no problem). £330

For options 2 and 3 i could use my bitspower copper ihs off my broken 6700k to replace the stock one. My intention is to go back to conductonaut on top of ihs between heatsink and same for my gtx 1080 pair. Ive ran this in the past successfully.

I pretty much just game with an attached asus 1440p monitor and do work ie typing/word processing etc on the system. I do like to tweak around with settings and trying out undervolts etc. Pretty much i try to get my system running as cool as possible but also as quiet as possible.

Anyway. Just wanting thoughts and opinions off you gents on what you think and why ? Im also a bit intrigued by option 1 as well

    Kind regards

    Chris (uk)

I mean even a below average one is going to be around 4.7Ghz, do you need to push it further, is it worth the cost to you? I'd not bother with the silver IHS.

The more i think about it the more im leaning towards option 2 and just swapping out the ihs for my bitspower one. Probably makes sense financially. Hopefully i dont buy it and the laptop still doesnt boot up. .

Is it the taller one you have? The 6700K one does fit on the 7700K fine.

Yes it sits higher than a standard ihs. I think it is compatible with 6700k and 7700k

Cool, that one does work well with liquid metal on both sides (so long as you are careful).

    Hi,

Just as a bit of a follow up. I purchased an i7 7700k cpu, delidded replaced TIM with conductonaut slapped my bitspower ihs on and the laptop is back up and running

Currently overclocked to 4.6 ghz with an undervolt of -100mv. Seems stable. I did try -125 mv undervolt and it blue screened constantly.
Cpu temp gets upto about 81/82 degrees when playing bf1 multiplayer on ultra. Trying to lower the temps a bit more im guessing reducing the overclock.

Any ideas for better stress testing the cpu for stability ?

Just thought id update post. Its great to have my laptop back up and running

    -.110mv should be ideal

81/82 on a heavy combined load is fine, you could as above see if a finer adjustment of voltage is possible, it does help temps the most.
