I am going to be buying a new laptop in the near future. I am tempted to go out and grab a P870 but could wait until July's product refresh - there is something about a Ryzen processor that appeals to me at this time.

If you had up to $3k USD to spend (well, I could spend more if I wanted) on a replacement laptop for your Alienware 17 R5, would you wait or get a P870 that is extremely loaded? I have previously had a loaded P770ZM so I am happy with the thought of buying used like I did with that monster system.

Depends on how long I want to keep it, though generally for the longest life you would buy at the start of a GPU generation.

If you don't mind a laptop with the 15.6", why not consider a ODM's version of the Clevo NH57ADS ? Especially, if the AMD chip appeals to you.

Otherwise, why not wait for the 17" Clevo X170SM, and see what it has to offer once the reviews and others here on NBR get a hold of it.

The Clevo P870 has been "End-of-Life'd" (EOL), so parts are going to be harder and harder to come by with each passing day. I think it would be worthwhile to investigate NH57ADS configurations, or wait the reported 4-5 weeks for the X170 to see how it ends up as a true DTR.

If someone was offloading a P870 cheap I could see the allure but it would have to be a very good price.

I saw that and immediately wondered what was wrong with it lol. There's more than $2200 worth of hardware in that thing not counting the chassis itself. $1800 is a ridiculous steal.

EDIT: NVM $1800 is the current bid . . . not buy it now. . .
