    P870DM or.. wait?

So, I've been on the fence on getting the P870DM as I think HIDevolution said that in a few weeks, you can expect a 980 SLI configuration available for Clevos.

Now, I can only speculate one thing that a new Clevo laptop would be available that can fit 2 x 980s since the current P870DM configuration only allows for 1 x 980 due to the extended MXM.

A few weeks is vague, but I'm not in a rush to get a laptop at the moment. While I'm impressed with what P870DM offers, there are a few more things that would really sell me on waiting on that "perfect" laptop right now:

    - 18 inch, G-Sync screen (1440p would be ideal, but 1080p is fine too. I won't touch 4k on a laptop)
    - 6700K. Obviously.
    - 2 x 980 (200W) availability
    - Keyboard designed for the bigger laptop (not re-use 15" laptop keyboard)
    - More than a plastic construction? I miss the m18x...

Any thoughts or even a hint from HIDevolution or Clevo? ;)

I haven't seen any 18 inch G Sync screens, and I'm not sure if/when one might be on the way. Touch screens on higher end "gaming" laptops are pretty few and far between as well. I don't know if we will see any 17 inch models with a larger keyboard either, as most manufacturers just use the same keyboard for multiple models.

If you aren't in a hurry, I'd say wait it out a little while. You know what you can get right now, and if you tire of waiting for new products, the P870DM would still be around for the foreseeable future. If your computer is dying or you need to upgrade for work reasons, then it might be a different story. But no set dates on any new models at this time though, vague timelines are it for now.

980 SLI is not going to happen with the 200W versions, it would be the 120W versions as it would be way to much heat, the GT80 Titan can't do it either.

I had same dilemma and poked around about GTX 980 SLI in Clevos. Mysn or XMG told me to keep an eye on their social media pages for big news coming soon. It's been 2 months now and I guess I'll wait Pascal.

    Thanks for the replies.

Yea, I'm not in a rush and if something worth waiting is around the corner I'll wait. Looking forward to what 2016 will bring us if I'm going to spend some cash on it. I'd get the GT80, but it's just too flashy for me and does not have gsync.

Agreed: It's probably best to wait if you're in no rush. Pascal release is getting closer by the day, so even if a 980 SLI won't be available soon, there's that to look forward to.

How many different GTX980s are there?

    I've seen a 200W version and a 180W version. Is the 120W version new?

I think Msi use it in their GT80. And Msi make their own cards.

Since we're talking P870DM, I thought we'd be limited to cards for Clevo based machines. The quote was hypothetical. Thx for the clarification.

    ???
    What do you mean?

I guess their plans are not yet public, but I've always been under the assumption that Clevo will have GTX980 SLI in a tweak to the P870DM using a variation of the 180W cards (mod to support SLI) with dual PSU config.

I only gave feedback to your answer in the previous post (see image).
2pcs gtx980 in SLI will not become a reality as I have understood it. Not good enough cooling in the middle MMX slot for a 180w graphics card. Maybe cards in Sli later(Pascal) :D

Nope SLI GTX 980 isn't going to happen, but I think you guys will generally be pleased when you see what's comming with Pascal.

The successors for our current high-end mobile GPUs are not as close as many people hope them to be...you are in for a longer wait than just 2-3 months.

Oh no :( If Prema says that, then I guess we're in for a long wait. Maybe 2 years after the 980M launch o_o

    He he :)

Well I did say you'll be happy with what's comming WITH Pascal, I wasn't specifically refering to the GPUs themselves but the whole package. But yes things are looking good, but I can't say any more of course. The ETA for new GPUs is usually pretty much in line with the rumours at each launch so I'll leave it to what is announced and leaked!

I will say wait for the new gpu, Pascal. I am pretty confident that GTX 1080m will be as strong, if not stronger, as GTX 980 laptop or desktop version.

I'm projecting Pascal Desktop GPUs to be available end of this year or Q1 2017. I can see that mobile versions will probably be out Q2-Q3 of 2017.

That would make it close to 3 years since the launch of the 980M, which is highly unlikely. Mobile Pascal is coming this year. There's no way nvidia is gonna go 2+ years without a new product.

It's not always what you want to do, but the limits of manufacturing that prevent you from doing what you want to do.

I am sure that Nvidia would like to launch as soon as possible of course.

We will have to wait and see ;)

5 years is a decent life for a system. It depends on your budget and needs really.

If you aren't too big of a hurry (like you have a failing system on your hands currently), then it would hopefully be worth waiting to see what new tech is available, or maybe pick up the current discount if it goes on sale between now and then.
