I just got it a week ago but wasn't home. So now that I open it up and log on for the first time, it says 78% plugged in, not charging. I tried a power drain, aka held it down for 10 seconds but it didn't fix it. What's the deal?

Goto the BIOS and under ACPI settings what does the FlexiCharger say ?

It should start charging at 70 and stop at 95.

So nothing wrong with the system or the battery.
Flexi Charger is there to prevent frequent charge and discharge cycles.

Oh? What do you mean? It's stopped at 83%, should not it stop at 95?

Basically it wont start charging unless the charge goes under 70%. And Windows take a few days / cycles to calibrate its own charge discharge reading.
For example my Windows reading says its 100% charged, but in reality the battery is @ 90% charge. Because i have the BIOS to stop charging at 90%.

Just disable it and that might correct the problem. I have it disabled.

If disabling it still does not work, disconnect AC adapter, remove the battery and hold down the power button 30 seconds a few times. Then put the battery back in and connect the AC to see if the message is still there that it is not charging.

and if the issue STILL persists, try and do a full battery cycle to properly calibrate it and windows to it. discharge to 0%, then recharge to 100% without any breaks in between. that helps sometimes :)

Unless you need to eek out your battery for tasks it's a good way of extending the life time of the cells leaving it be.

Yup, if Flexicharger has been used for a prolonged period of time and the battery % doesn't seem right then you will need to recalibrate as per @jaybee83 . There's more info in the user manual on this on page 5-9 but it is refering more to the fact that the battery reading accuracy will deteriorate over a period of several months if Flexicharger is enabled for this period. Disabling the option, then allowing a complete discharge of the battery and then enabling Flexicharge again should recalibrate the capacity reading.

Microsoft really do need to create better hooks for the firmware to talk to the software in this respect.
