My power button has been a bit dodgy for a few months now, sometimes requiring multiple presses to get it to boot... Seems it has given up entirely now.
I will replace the power board, but for now I'd like to know if it's possible to make it boot any other way by shorting the pins etc. If so, which pins need shorting?

The two pads either side of the button as that's what it does. It's not doable in another way I know.

It is also possible to use the corresponding pin on the connector, either at the power button board or on the connector at the motherboard side (pin #14). It's a small relay, so you only need to short it briefly with ground for the system to start (pins #3, 5 or 20). Sometimes use this method on the mb end during repair work since it saves hooking up the flat ribbon cable and power board.
The pads on the button board would be easier, of course. But if the fault is with the board or cable then the mb is fine too as long as you're a bit careful. Could also leave just the ribbon cable connected and short it at its end. Bit of tape over all the exposed pins and then a small incision at #14 and one of the grounds and it'd be workable for a while, at least until the new button board arrives. -
