So I have on my way a new Alienware M17 R4 that is about to be delivered, after it shipped I started lurking around in the forums on the cons of owning a BGA laptop. So for the last couple of days I have been thinking of reselling the laptop on ebay as soon as it comes in and purchasing a P870DM3 with a 1080 with the deludding service but I have a few concerns about the heat and the noise these machine produce.

    What do you guys recommend?

    Thanks!

Please sell your AW and buy a Clevo. Desktop components FTW.

I recommend buying it from HIDEvolution and getting the factory delidding service so it will be covered under warranty. Also, if you have some extra cash, opt for the Silicon Lottery CPU option that way you ensure to get a CPU that runs cooler to start with and overclock higher. My silicon lottery CPU runs at 4.5GHZ all day with max temps of 88c under stress load

If you email [email protected] and mention that you are an NBR member you will get a discount

Can you seriously not return it?

Or like when it comes literally don't open it, then you can still sell it as new and unopened.

Yeah I'm just going leave the box as it is and probably put it up on ebay and maybe get an extra $200

Friend of mine did me the favor and bought it for me since dell does not ship to the northern marianas islands (US territory). Don't want him going thru the hassle to return it.

Should it be considerably quieter a single GPU with the vapor chamber?

You can't buy a single GPU laptop with the vapor chamber, it only comes with dual GPU setups. Please buy dual 1080 GTX in SLI

You will love everything about it. But If you are sensitive to noise, then you will be seriously disappointed.
But wont it be easier for you to just return it to Dell for a full refund ?

Thanks for all the feedback Phoenix.

Quick question though.. Do I really need the $300 dollar Silicon delidding service? Will the $50 dollar one be enough? I'm not that heavy on OC.

Well I don't mind the noise so much but me and my wife are expecting a baby this month and I will be gaming on the same room as the baby would be, I don't mid the noise that much since I game with headphones on but I'm a little concerned it might be to much for the baby to handle. What do you think?

I wish I could just return it to Dell directly but I purchased it through a friend that shipped it to me since Dell does not ship to my location (Us territory).

I wouldn't waste 300 dollars on a silicon lottery cpu, most 6700K run just fine and are actually just as good as the one's you get through silicon lottery .
I'd keep the 300 add 50 and spend it on 7700K when it comes out, if anything .

not an absolute must if you're stretching your budget as it can always be bought later should the need arise.

First system I had was a barebone Clevo P870DM-G with a 6700K that couldn't even run stable at 4.2 GHz x4 (on all cores that is). Next system which was a Eurocom Sky X9 also had a 6700K, this time a bit better, it was able to do 4.3 GHz stable.

I have seen many users here complain about high temps even at stock speeds. The 6700K is a hit or miss, 50-50 chance to get a good one. Even if you don't want to overclock, spending a bit more to get a Silicon Lottery one ensures your CPU will run cooler overclocked or not. Giving you better thermals and longevity since the CPU won't be running hot constantly.
This Silicon Lottery CPU I got (rated to run @4.8GHz in a desktop) can run @ 4.7 GHz not very stable, 4.6 GHz stable but with higher temps than I would like in a laptop for prolonged use (94C) or running super stable @ 4.5 GHz all day long with max temps of 85C no matter what I throw at it.

Delidding will bring down the temps by around 10C alone. But if one gets a non lucky 6700K, then if it runs at 93-94 C at stock speed under max prolonged load, then -10C should help but still, I personally like averaging around 75C when gaming

When Idle or just browsing the net, my CPU temp is 35-40C @ 4.5 GHz on all cores. That's how good those silicon lottery CPUs are. No matter how you look at it, be it overclocking or running stock, the matter of fact is that they will run cooler either ways.

Verdict: do not get it if you are not a heavy overclocker and if you're already stretching your budget.

If I decide to go SLI, will I be able to run the laptop on one PSU? Non gaming task? I take my laptop to work everyday and would be a hassle to pack both of them. Also do you guys know if there is an ETA for the 3k screen? Talked to my wife about getting SLI (going $4k+ and above) and surprisingly shes on board.

The way I do it is, I have 2 power adapters at home so when I go home and connect my laptop, it has all the power it needs. With 1 power adapter, I wouldn't imagine playing games without throttling due to lack of power.

Then I have a 3rd power adapter which I have in my laptop bag so when I go out, I don't need to constantly unhook one of the two power adapters, I just put my laptop in the bag and fly..... it runs super fine even @ 4.5 GHz on all cores and doesn't throttle, mind you, I don't play games when I go out, I just surf the net but it doesn't throttle even when I stress test it or run Fire Strike. but that's because I have just 1 power adapter.

Please buy 2 power adapters at least and if you can stretch it, a 3rd one for when you go to the office so you don't get hassled every time you have to unhook one of the power adapters from the Y cable and put it in the bag, that's a pain as they are huge.

    Be smart, be like Phoenix

Very true its just a fan, but the new DM3/DM2 fans are actually kinda loud at max and can be annoying for some people.

To be fair, Clevo fans have always been loud on max. Clevo does have the best performing fans, after all.

True, but the P870Dm fans are way more bearable. My friends DM3 side by side is much louder, but we don't really mind it since it never reaches those speeds while gaming or normal use. Only when long duration rendering or benchmarking.

Just get the 6700K (normal one)... Also get IC Diamond... I would do the repasting on my own, $100 is a total rip off for it..

Also you don't need 2 1080s.. A single one is good enough.. Get a single + vapour heatsink..

Not necessarily, but they at least provide a solid, flat surface (which the notebook should always be on; no sheets or cloth of any kind). The Coolermaster NotePal U2 Plus and U3 Plus are good ones, made of aluminum and have adjustable fans. (I see more of an impact on idle temps with it than with temps under load, but it still helps a bit.)

You don't need a notebook cooler. But a cooler will help you with less dust in your laptop and will lower temp a bit. Every degrees down will help if you looking for max numbers in bench.
Here is the link of my mod U3  http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...lienware-laptops.593626/page-46#post-10208973

Any other coolers you would recommend without modding?

I didn't mod mine and it works great, just move the fans to where the laptop vents / fans are located and you're done

    I don't like modding anything
