PC Microworks is having a Memorial Weekend special where you can preorder a laptop with Intel's Montevina chips and the 9800m GTX. They say that the order will ship the second week of June because not all the parts have been released.
How many people have bought notebooks from this company? Are they reliable? Are they just a re-branded Sager?
Thanks for your help guys,
Brendhan

You need to figure out the ODM for the notebook you are considering. The Impulse is the same as the Zepto 6x24W, which is made by Inventec. I would expect it to share the same buggy BIOS as the Zepto.
John -
It is not a zepto, it is a clevo who do not in general have buggy bioses. read the clevo forum about the m860tu to find out about it. also if you order either the 9800m GTX it won't ship till 31 july if you look at the eta for that part
-
It says the ETA for 9800M GTX is July 31.
-
too late smood
-
He is right, it is the Zepto. The Edge is the m860tu
-
dont suppose someone will buy it for me and i will give them money credit card though platinum account.... lol.....sigh
-
if it is the impulse you are looking at it is not currently listed with an option for the 9800...
-
Dude, that would suck and rock at the same time, a 9800 in a 14inch?
-
Damn too bad they didn't release the M57TU first. Then we could get our proper 9800M GTX + 17" combo.
-
PCMicroWork's is a reputable company. I bought my D901C from them about a year ago.
-
Do they have an acknowledged rep who regularly participates on these forums? Based on my relatively regular participation here over the past year or so, I've gotten a much better sense of several of the different resellers based on the actions (both good and bad) of their acknowledged reps on the forum; I find that information to be invaluable, and I would suggest that PCMW is only hurting itself if it does not have a rep who participates meaningfully on the forums here; provided no sales pushing is done - that's what kick-a5$ websites are for!
-
Like Eu..., eh....nevermind. Lets not bring him up
No rep that I'm aware of but I was just saying that they are a reputable company. It's not some fly-by-night ebay company that will take your money and run. -
And I quite agree with you; to the extent that I question their approach, as we've discussed, my differences are as much the product of my own innate conservativism as much as their approach to ODM support approval publicity - as far as I know, to date each time they've stepped out ahead of Clevo they've been correct, which adds to their reputation for technical proficiency.
That being said, without an acknowledged rep around whom we can ask questions of and whatnot, the predictive value of their track record is substantially diminished because there's simply no way to distinguish technical proficiency from blind good luck - after all, even a stopped clock tells the correct time twice a day (once a day if you're on military time).
And no, I'm not thinking of Mr. E-uo know who, but more someone along the lines of xotic, pnb, and, just recently, kobalt computers. In fact, since PCMW is basically more of an OEM like Sager than a strict reseller like those three, it might be even more interesting to have a PMCW rep onboard who would be willing to engage in substantive discussions (within reason, obviously) of the company's products and developments. -
maybe PCMW do so well, they see no need for a rep here ^_^
-
They should have a rep here, they`d gain more customers.
I bought mine from Xotic strictly because Justin is a member here and I knew who I`d be dealing with.... -

Not picking on Shyster1 here, just using a couple of comments to illustrate a point:
Offering the 860TU adds to their marketing proficiency, not technical imho. I know I would get in trouble with Intel if we offered Montevina products before the launch - perhaps Intel US is less strick than Intel UK
I know we (for definite) and most other Clevo resellers could offer an 860TU and even a 570TU tomorrow if that's how we wanted to do things.....
Just to clarify, Kobalt is not a strick reseller, we build and test in house
-
Hey Neil, are you guys gonna offer the TUs (m860 and m570) soon?
-
Corrective instruction is always welcomed, even if I do get a bit ... argumentative at times.
No disagreement there.
I did not know that, and I apologize for speaking without knowing. It is a pleasure to have your company on the forums. -
I don't know of a single business, or business model, that benefits from having less, rather than more, customer feedback.
-
Hey, once we get service and value for money, that's what counts. I don't think its fair to say this one is overall better than this one. I'm pretty sure with the competition for these notebooks all the resellers perform to the best of their abilities.

Shyster1 - np
eleron911 - yes we will be offering both (esp the M860TU) soon. I believe that when Montevina has officially been launched in the next couple of weeks our 860TUs will be available on pre-order.
edit: I will be able to confirm release dates tomorrow when we are back in the office (it's a public holiday in the UK too
-
What is your warranty politics?
I mean, from a European standpoint...does it work pan-european or the customer pays for shipping if outside the UK ?
I might have to look into your offers if the warranty works for me... -
Neil@Kobalt Company Representative
It's pan-european so we would pay for shipping both ways.
-
Does it cover ALL Europe or do you have special policies?

Neil, you are correct that no one is supposed to be advertising or selling, even in pre-order, the Montevina platform until Intel releases it.
However there are some who do not have enough volume with Intel so that they fly under Intel's radar. They are not channel partners, much less Premier partners, so there is little Intel can do to control what they do.
Shyster1, when you look back on the PCMW performance with previous model releases they have always begun shipping much later than they originally stated, and they always begin shipping after Sager does, never before. -
I quite agree and, if I could find the post again, I'd say that it's in conformity with what I've said before about the dangers of jumping on the pre-order bandwagon - that, once all is said and done, by the time you've waded through the pushed-back delivery dates, the buggy firmware updates, and etc, you will end up with a functioning system at about the same time as, or a little after, the folks who waited to order until the system had actually been released.
I don't think there's even a smidgeon of disagreement twixt ourselves on this point.
-
Beleive me Shyster, that rep is gonna get here soon.
-
Neil@Kobalt Company Representative
eleron911 - It currently covers all of Europe
-
Thanks Neil. I might be considering you for upgrades in the future and when I`ll get a laptop for my brother .
-
Did you read the NDA before you signed it?
-
What NDA???
I just requested for a rep from them to come over to NBR.... -
He was kidding dude
Anyway, a PCMW rep is needed and would be welcome here! -
I guess I'm just too suspicious a sort - I thought perhaps you were going to be the rep!
Agreed.
