Been lurking around their site for a few days trying to decide which laptop to buy. I've finally come to a "kind of" decision for the 17.3" Optimus IV. Seems like a good laptop to me and within my price range. I actually think for the price it's a very good deal...although I could be wrong since I'm still a bit clueless with laptops :D

At the moment I still have my laptop from our friends at Kobaltcomputers.com ^^ Anyway I like Clevo so someone directed me to PCspecialist. If anyone has a better UK company suggestion then please let me know!

Preferably I wanted to wait a few more months for the Nvidia 7 series to come out, but it looks like my laptop is on the verge of breaking down. Should I grab myself a new laptop from them now? It has a GTX 660M which is a massive upgrade to my current laptop.

OR is it worth painstakingly waiting a few months for the next series (I heard it may be comingout in Spring) or will the wait not be worth the upgrade?

    Thanks!

The next series of CPUs will be out around june at the earliest. Probably july or so. The GTX 7xx series from nVidia... that's a different story. MAYBE same time as haswell. Maybe later in the year. Maybe it won't come out at all and will go straight to maxwell in 2014. No telling.

As for the wait, if you could get a good new machine right now, I'd say go ahead. If a laptop's breaking down I wouldn't wait myself. Hell if I could upgrade right now I would XD.

I don't know of a good UK dealer, sorry. Check the reseller feedback subforum?

I have spent a fortune on my last 3 laptops from them :) They are the best all round i have found- price, service, knowledge etc

With any company , i always think its best to ring up before you order on line and have a 20 min chat with the sales team- they are all trained pc folk, so ask any question or worry you have.

They are very highly regarded, and you will find 98 positive reviews for 1 negative - also the courier they use , gives you a "one hour" delivery slot, which is great as you know when your new toy will arrive.

Theres always a discount code flying around as well for pcspecialist , that gives you £15 pounds off - in any advert of there's Better than nothing, on already great prices :)

I would ring up sales, ask for matthew , and let him take your order. You will be in good hands :)

Just a happy customer, whose been treated well here, so all good recommendations from me :)

P.s. , if you start the waiting game there is always something better coming out - the power of the cards just now and the price, is at a really great place, and i think even if there is a new series coming out, it wont be the same massive leap as from the 6990 / 580 to the 7970m 680m .

    Hope this helps

    Pj

All the big laptop reveals will be at Computex at the beginning of June and then it will take at least another month for them to start hitting the retail channels. Generally speaking, expect the new Clevo's to be in people's hands (if they pre-order) no earlier than mid July.

Thanks for the replies guys! I'll deffo get into contact with them. How long does it usually take between the purchase and delivery to the door?

So waiting till the 7 series is really not worth it? Because someone told me they are gonna be a a massive upgrade to the 6 series.

ONLY if the GTX 7xx series is Maxwell in architecture, which isn't slated to come out until 2014. It won't be anytime soon if it is. The GTX 7xx series is most likely going to be a power-revised form of the GTX 6xx series, like the GTX 5xx was to the GTX 4xx. The difference is that the GTX 6xx series isn't as unoptimized by default as the GTX 4xx series was, so a power revision may not improve much for it. Assuming it's even done, as for all I know there could simply be no high end 7xx series. The 3xx series was only present in low end to medium end mobile cards, and desktops skipped it entirely, going from the GTX 2xx series to the GTX 4xx series. So we'll never know. But we can just hope.

End of story, if you want a machine now, or even a month from now, it's not worth waiting for the revisions. They won't be THAT much better than the current available options.

That person is very incorrect. Massive upgrades come with die shrinks and architectural changes. The former happened in 2012, and the latter is scheduled for 2014.

Thanks MrDJ! Helping me all around here :D Hopefully your suggestions work and I can still use my current laptop for a while longer or give it to a family member. Does anyone know how much better the GTX 670M is? I'd rather a 17" laptop again but I could grab the next one up with a 15" but a GTX 670M.

670M or 670MX? The MX is the one you want. It shouldn't be too weak, but it isn't in the class of the desktop chips like the 680M is.

670MX for the 15". Anyone have a link or knowledge of the current graphic cards? Wouldn't mind seeing the difference between the 660M, 670M, 670MX, 675MX and 680M. From looking around the GTX 660M isn't that much better than my current GTX 280M. Apprently the 660M plays Starcraft 2 on ultra at around 50-60fps. That's virtually the same as my current laptop...before it fecked up lol.

    congrats.
i never like rush jobs when it comes to expensive lappys. a burn in and test can take a day and upto 2-3 days for finance to clear so was it sitting on a shelf waiting just for you :)
would still of preferred that compared to pcs very misleading crap warranty though :D

    enjoy your new beast mate.

Good point tbh, though i think my spec was very much pre built, the only option i changed to the default was the Samsung 250GB SSD (and that was after i called them to say id ordered the wrong one! :p). Finance took less than 24 hours, once it cleared i got a shipment confirmation.

I was sitting on the PCS site for days umming and ahhing then i mistakenly came across the OCUK site and the rest is history.

    I love my beast... :D

I've used OCUK for a long time, you just have to be a bit direct with them but otherwise I have had no issues.

That's directly from their site. As to why it would be fake, I don't know, however I doubt my lappy would be under cover anymore after repastes and switching to 7970M myself.

Their warranty options hurt my brain to read. It's terribly worded, and I see some British slang used as well in other parts of the full warranty explanation.

As for your coverage, I do believe that repasting is allowed (although some companies prefer you did not do it yourself) and changing of a video card is well within warranty limitations; however that new GPU is not covered by the warranty as only parts they manually place inside the machine will be replaced by them. Also, it goes without saying that personal destruction of any parts in the machine void the warranty. I.E. if you static-damaged the CPU while cleaning the heatsink, or threw water on the keyboard. If a part fails on its own then it'll be replaced.

who said anything about fake. i said and quote "very misleading crap warranty though"

ive posted a full discription on here before after a few owners over the years contacted me by pm asking for advice. before you ask, no i do not work for any other computer company which ive been accused of in the past but a long term happy customer of kobalt and now mysn uk. i like to give back to the community that helped me out over 5 years ago after my alienware nightmare.

im at work so i cant find the original thread with the full explanation of why i think its misleading and crap.
ill let you do the sums.

    3 years standard = 1 month collect and return / 1 year parts / 3 years labour

    3 years silver = 1 year collect and return / 1 year parts / 3 years labour

    3 years gold = 2 years collect and return / 2 years parts / 3 years labour

strange that their config pages does not offer the above platinum warranty that M3ezu posted.

just for example, mysn warranty. standard 2 years included which covers collect and return, 2 years parts, 2 years labour. upgradable to 3 and 4 years.

haha no worries, im not accusing u of anything here :) sorry about the fake part, my bad.

weird tho, here i thought that all EU member states have to implement that standard 2 year full warranty that MySn offers, for example. so are they even allowed to restrict it like that?

    @ jaybee

Apparently that's not the case, (had to google it myself):

    The EU position
There has been some confusion of the impact of European law with regards to warranties. A common misunderstanding is that a business must give a two year warranty. This is not the case. The confusion has arisen over the translation and the use of the word 'warranty'.

    Source:
What's the difference between a guarantee and a warranty?

As Meaker said, they are replaceable if they use MXM slots. If they are integrated, then you're stuck with them save a motherboard replacement, but the higher end ones allow for replacement of the GPU. Of course, replacing the GPU means the new GPU is not covered under the warranty, however the rest of the system should be (you'd have to check directly with your seller.

Any machine based off the P150EM and P170EM will have a slot, pretty much if that machine is sold with a 680M as an option then it's in a slot.

Looks like the optimus IV is a soldered design.
