Is it possible to use the HDMI port on the laptop as a means of connecting a PS3 or similar device to display output on and sound via?

No, I don`t think so. The HDMI on the laptop is output, not input as televisions.

im pretty sure the hdmi is out only. you need some kind of tv tuner to hook up a console to, and last time i checked the lag was so bad that you couldnt really play any games on it.

The HDMI is for output purposes only, no input.
