So I've been finding out everything I can about this laptop and I realized that there is a fingerprint accessible only file on these machines. I click on "Personal Safe" and it says that I need to upgrade to the full version to get additional features. Is the feature available only on the pay version or is there something I'm not seeing? Is the only benefit of this software to use the fingerprint scanner to log in?

So is there anything you can use the finger scanner for WITHOUT paying for software, like something freeware?

Windows 7 supports biometric login, and you shouldn't even need to install any additional software.

I don't even feel i NEED the fingerprint scanner if anything it's like a novelty for me to feel like a secret agent, but i guess better security is always good.

Honestly, fingerprint scanners feel like a novelty after the first week. Unless you have a password that the NSA generated for you, it's probably not worth it.

I use KeePass to store my passwords. Better than a gimmick fingerprint reader.

Damn, I was afraid of that. I really liked the idea of a fingerprint only file that I could access, but oh well......

You can still have a pretty cool hidden file. Check out truecrypt

I use it to keep my financial documents and such well protected. You can create an encrypted file, folder, drive, etc. They also let you have "Plausible deniability" where you get two layers of protection, in case someone makes you decrypt the outer container.

We learned about this stuff in our information security courses and the consensus was that truecrypt does pretty well. (If the licensing doesn't bother you, since it's not truly open source).

That's $20 I'd rather spend on a game or food :D. Besides after spending nearly 1500 (some people a lot more) that 20 bucks is just one more feature/add-on that needs to be purchased.

Personal safe works fine except a handful of sites that use a java popup requesting login.

Can you use the fingerprint scanner to log into windows when you start up the laptop? That might be kinda cool.

Yes, that is the main thing about this software. That is actually how I log on to my laptop. It saves time as opposed to just typing my password.

It is nice to logon. I was hoping it would be a little more robust for websites and such too but not the greatest. The problem I had with my last Sager with fingerprint reader was it lost calibration really easily and became more annoying to recalibrate all the time than actually use it so I just stopped using it. This one so far seems pretty darn good.

Uninstall "Protector Suit 2009" will make it disappear.
