Yup, I just bought myself a Sager 5720 from DiscountLaptops.com!!!

    Sager NP5720 - C
    17" WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) Active Matrix , Glare-Type Display
Nvidia 7800 GTX Go 256 MB
    1.86 Intel Pentium M (750) Processor
512 MB DDR2 SDRAM (will upgrade to 2 GB Kingston PC4200)
80 GB Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
    Internal 8X DVD R/RW Dual-Layer Lightscribe
Internal Intel 2915ABG 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN
    Internal Bluetooth Card
    8-cell Smart Lithium Ion Battery
    4-in-1 Flash Card Reader (SD/MMC/MS/MSPro)
10/100/1000BASE-TX Fast Ethernet on boardLAN Card
    Integrated 1.3M Digital Video Camera
    1-year parts / 1-year labor warranty from Sager + 2-year limited on-site extended warranty & help desk

It sure wasn't cheap, but this rig oughtta last me a very, very long time, assuming I like it enough to keep it. This is my first 17" notebook. I would've preferred a 15.4", but from everything I've researched, there won't be one with the 7800 Go.

Shipping is scheduled for 10/28. Rest assured, a review and pics will be posted.

That's a beautiful notebook, congrats on your purchase!

7800GTX is the most awesome mobile card, and you got a nice hard drive.

You said it was expensive...well, it looks like it! If you have fun with it though, it's well worth the cost. :p ;)

Thanks for the kudos, guys! I'm hoping the thing isn't gonna be too big for hauling to/from work. I've gotten quite comfortable with my Z70va's weight. The 2.5 extra pounds of the 5720 doesn't sound like much, but the true test will be getting that bad boy in my hands.

Chaz -- Did you get your 5320, yet?

Sounds good. I'm quite pleased that the pricing came out very reasonably (the 9890 OTOH is still too pricey). I'm still getting a Dell though. Congrats on your purchase!

    You'll love the screen!

I'm borrowing a friend's XPS2 for the weekend. I want to see how I take to hauling a 17" notebook around. I'm quite concerned about the bulk of these big notebooks. I probably should've tried this little experiment BEFORE ordering the 5720, huh?? :p

LOL maybe 17" is bigger than you thought! :p

Yeah, my notebook is mainly stationary, but I like to keep it relativley small, and so I can travel around the house and to/from work with it. ;)

    How heavy is the 5720?

I've been carrying around laptops like the DELL 840, the IBM r50p, and now a Compaq nx 9600 for work for a few years now. Compared to the nx9600, the Sager will be like a feather.

    That's really light for a 17"!

Mine is only like a pound less...7.5lb. Then again, you have the extra bulk with a 17... but for a 7800GTX it's worth the trade-off!

Well, it's been about 36 hours with my friend's XPS2. I've taken it to work, to a few wifi hotspots, and just got home after hauling it around at my lake condo. I think a 17" notebook is just too big to be practical for my use. I travel a good bit for work and recreation. I can't imagine taking this size of a notebook on a plane as often as I'm on the go. So, as painful as it was, I cancelled my 5720 order. :( :( :(

I'm going to do one of the following:

    1. Wait and hope that a 15.4" notebook with a PM and 6800Go finally hits the market. Asus just released a 15.4" + P4 + 6800Go, so it can be done.
    2. Keep my Z70va for travel and buy a new SFF PC with a 7800 GTX to replace my current, aging SFF.

Time for a couple of beers! :D

O NO! dell i coming out with a XPS M140, so that may be a possibility! I'm sorry you didn't think that the 17inch would be practical.

Ah, that's a shame...sorry to hear that you cancelled it Jack. :(

In addition to the Z-81SP, there's also the Sager 7620 with a P4+ X800. But, it, like the Z81, is just too thick and heavy to be practical...and also the Pentium 4 is a turn off.

Yes, that would be a great combo - PM and Go6800/7800GTX. Unfortunatley, that only exists in 17"....oh well.

Isn't your Z70VA any good for games....what do you get in 3DMark05?

Y'know, it wasn't so much the weight that bothered me. It's the bulk. These 17" DTR notebooks are quite thick and wide. I'm no coke-bottle eyeglass geekling. I guess I'm just used to the 15.4" frame. At least I now know what's best for me.

A 12-pound notebook? You must have one of those old Sager 8890 monsters... or a 9860/80/90?

My dream notebook would be a 6800 Go in your 5320!!! :)

The Z70va is fine for games, though. I get 2670 no O/C, and 3024 at 410/365 in 3DMark05.

Yeah, the size is what keeps me from 17" DTR notebooks. Ill probably always stay under 15.4"....

A Go6800 in my notebook would be pretty sweet, although I am very happy with my notebook - 256MB X700 is very powerful. Far Cry on 1680x1050 is amazing. :p

You'll have to wait for a notebook with a 7600. A 15.4" notebook with a 6800 will be just as heavy as a 17". All the guts are just crunched in more. Even the 7620 tips the scales at 7.6 pounds. Morevoer, most 15.4" "thin and lights" are in the 6 pound range. Are you sure that 2 pounds will make a world of difference for you? I can understand the bulk (which is a huge difference), but the most you are going to shave off is 2-2.5 pounds if you put things in perspective...

That's a good point. When I bought my notebook, I didn't really care about the weight of it so much as how physically big it was. A 17" would be unweildy for me. Plus, I'd have to get a new bag, which would have been a real shame because the bag I have now, a Dell leather one, is really nice.

15.4" is the sweet spot for me. ;)

That machine is one of the biggest notebooks that I have ever seen! I saw a Compaq very similar to that the other day, and the power brick is bigger and heavier than some ultraportables! (almost... :p )

I'll bet you don't get more than 1-1.5 hours of battery life with that...Pentium 4 sucks up a large amount of power.

Thanks for the props! It's a whole lot easier to get used to the idea of a big, pricey lappy when it's gonna be used for work as well as my home entertainment system. ;) I'll definitely do the review/benchmark/screenshot thing when I get the beast. It should arrive by next Friday, if all goes well.

Congrats on your purchuse, I think the Sager 5720 is a wise choice, even if you have to compromise slightly on the bulk issue(same here).
I <3 my XPS M170, we are like cousins now.
    Enjoy your experience
..lets hope our notebooks last a long time at the top...ya right!

Hey can I be included in that gaming gang? I've got a boutique rig!

Submitted my review yesterday like Dellguy said, and Andrew told me it should be posted toward the end of this week. It will be awesome - I spent an hour taking the photos (there's somewhere around 20 in the review), and an hour and a half editing them. Then I spent 6 hours writing it...then another hour correcting it.

    Finally finished it though!

i think you will really get used too the 17" size, i carry my N6210 in my backback everyday to class, it fits perfectly :) then i just walk to class from my dorm, very easy, I will be doing a review of my N6210 pretty soon i think, I know it doesn't really compare in terms of performance to your crazy ass Sagers but i think the N6210 has some tricks of it's own the screen is amazing and dual harddrives will be very nice :) I wish they would have put a X700 in in but i don't game all that much so it is good, it tears Half-Life 2 apart so that's all i'm really worrie about :) FEAR is pretty tough on it but it is very playable with the good features running. but on pretty low resolution.

everyone in my school loves there Apple's so i just love bringing this thing to class and they are just in awe by the screen

wow i just looked at Sager's site! that isn't a widescreen notebook?!?!?! that thing has to be enormous!

I'm crossing my fingers on that. It all depends on whether Dell releases coupons or not. So far, it's looking bleak with only those dinky $400 off coupons. Without 'em, I can't get the laptop. :(

But then again, I can still wait until January (at the latest) when Yonah comes...

I'm sure they love their Apples. Weirdos.

The 5720 most definitely IS a widescreen notebook. That's what the "W" in "WSXGA+" and "WUXGA" usually stands for.

Yeah, me too haha. I hope they have at least another 30% off coupon. They should around Thanksgiving though, or they wouldn't sell as many for Christmas. Who is actually going to spend full price on that thing when in 5 years, it will be probably terrible-fair at playing games.

That's what I worry. They know that people will buy like crazy around Christmas, so that gives them less incentive to send out coupons.

Might be the pics, but the pics might not be the 5720. The 5320 looks almost exactly the same, but it has a 15.4" widescreen. (ChazMan421 recently posted a great review of that machine.) The 5720 is wider and you can tell the difference in pics of the two b/c the 5720 has a number pad on the keyboard. (The touchpad is a little to the left of center on the notebook so that it lines up with the center of the keyboard, too.)

Actually, you would be correct. The 5720 is the 17" version of my 5320. Both are in my users manual - one is "Model A" and one is "Model B".

Thanks for the compliment on my review! :)
