Is there any portable (or at least semi portable) device that we can use to charge our 9262's? I already have an inverter that connects to my cigarette port in my car that I used to charge my laptop sometimes. However, I am wondering if theres something I can carry around on special occasions when I know I wont be able to charge it through the wall or my cigarette port.

For instance, I know that some computers are able to charge off of a black and decker power to go device. Now, I doubt I can find something as portable as that, but is there anything similar to that that we can use? Its unlikely, but its worth a shot.

The biggest reason I bring this up is because I went on vacation and spent many hours flying. While I don't mind flying, I didn't like that I couldn't even watch a full movie because my battery doesn't last long enough. I realize thats the disadvantage to having such a powerful machine, but it would be nice if we had some options to help alleviate the pain.

As sad as it sounds, I thought about bringing one of my emergency car jumpers because I know that it has enough power in it to charge and has an ac port on it. It made me wonder if one of those things would even work in my situation. Has anyone tried something like that? As you can see, I am kind of desperate.

Thanks for your replies and help.

Wouldn't it be easier if you got a second battery and charge them both before you leave town?

Yes it would. However, with flying, they wont let me bring on a screwdriver and you have to unscrew the battery to put it in. So I am out of luck there. It seems to be that flying is the time when I am away from power most often so a solution for that would pretty much fix the entire problem.

A cheaper alternative would be to get nice little PMP to use instead of your lappy when on those long trips. I have looked at Universal Batteries offered by APC such as this one from Amazon and the reveiws do not seem favorable. I have not found anything else, though I really have not looked that hard especially since I now have this little guy offered by MP4Nation. Cheaper and much lighter to carry around than an extra battery.

You can just buy one little cheap laptop that can be used in airplanes and other trips because D901C (NP9262) is not maked for this

D901C is not made to be used on batt
even if you run it with min. power consumption the D901C batt will make max 1 hour in game like GTA 4 i dont know maybe like 10-15 min. so even if you have i dont know 5 batt's you cant do this
and i dont see where you can place that big laptop in plane you cant placed in your lap

You could get one of those little portable DVD players for less money than an extra battery, or battery subsitute, would cost you.

You can get a travel sized screwdriver + an extra battery.
In fact, any screwdriver less than 7 inches in length are permitted as a carry-on according to the TSA.

Just don't try to argue that point when you're being sucker-punched by two security guards while another one stalks towards you with a taser in hand.

Please note the original post. The OP intends to use his laptop for movies during flight - not gaming.

Wow guys, thanks for all the posts. I had no idea that you were able to bring a smaller screwdriver on the plane with you. As of right now, with only doing smaller tasks like typing in word, I can get about 1 hour and 30 minutes max. Thats on battery saver with all the unnecessary things turned off (like aero and other battery hogs). So I assume watching a movie will bring me down to an hour or so. Ill take a look and see tonight. So the second battery thing could possibly work, although I would need to stop the movie and shutdown to change it.

A PMP is also nice because I wanted to get a new mp3 player anyway so why not just get one that does video as well. The flip side to that is that the screen may be too small.

Buying another computer for just flights seems like an expensive option to be honest. I'd have to look into that and weigh out the prices.

How would I go about seeing how much power is being drawn by a computer? My Dad has a fairly old laptop now and I could possibly convince him to upgrade it and give me his old one. It doesnt get good battery life either, but I dont think it draws that much power. Thus, I might be able to get one of those black and decker power to go things and use it with his. I just need to see how much power is being drawn to see if that would work out.

Do you all have any other suggestions to give me? So far we have come up with a pretty good list, but I'm sure theres more out there.

Go on Ebay, get a Thinkpad T41 or T42 (not T43, too power hungry) with intel pentium M, with no dedicated GPU (power sucker); also buy one/two new cheap 9 cell battery for it, ought to get you 4 hours movies each.

    Or get a netbook?

I have to admit, they were startled when it went through the xray machine the last time I went to the airport. And since I sit in the exit row, this thing can just barely fit if I pull the tray out all the way.

I've narrowed it down to a portable dvd player and a cheap old laptop. Thanks for your help guys.

I second the netbook / secondary laptop idea. It's why I intend to keep my FSC once my 9262 arrives (with some upgrades)

Otherwise: Tazor + Human + Spare Battery = instant recharge

Just thought I would give you all an update on what I did. I got a phillips pet1002 for use on long flights. I found someone who had it and convinced them to sell it to me for cheap. It doesnt have a way to read off of usb drives or an external hard drive which is a bummer since I dont want to use dvd's to burn my avi files (it does read avi files as well as regular dvds), but it was a cheap deal. I also bought a black and decker power to go charger just for the rare cases where I take flights that are longer than 4 hours (which is what cnet said the battery life is).

And, for the kick of it, I charged up my 9262 to full capacity and let it run down again. When it got to the 2% mark, I charged it with the jump starter I have sitting in my garage. It was able to charge it all the way back up while I let it play a movie and it kept it at 100% until the movie ended. So I wish I could travel with something like that, but there is no way I could carry that on board. Not only is it too heavy, but I doubt security would ever allow that.

security has issues with nail clippers. forget jump starters.

I still think a netbook would have been the wiser choice, it would have given you a lot more functionality in the same size frame. A cheap deal is always a good deal tho, that should always be taken into account. happy flying!

Its not the tazer thats going to hurt, its your pride after you poop your pants from the electrical current seizing your nervous system :p

My recommendation is to get a nice netbook, you can get them sub $400 now its small, has long battery life, can probably come in handy for a lot more than just this one use, ect.

The 1000HE boast like a 9 hour battery life so I would expect 6+ watching movies on it, the huge advantage of a netbook instead of a portable dvd player is all your media is digital. No need to carry a big book of dvds with you to lose/break.

I have a 250gb HDD in my 1000H and about 200 anime episodes, 1000 mp3's and 50 movies and my drive is not even a quarter full. Plus I have over 1000 games on here with my emulators. This thing is definitely a great source of entertainment and the main reason I got it.

Im on it right now actually, it was a really good investment.
