Possible display/graphics issue. Ideas?

I'll post an image here, but basically I'm having intermittent display issues.

Clevo P650SG/Sager NP8652, i7-4720HQ, GTX 980M, IPS display

Sometimes, caused by moving the lid or by seemingly random causes, the display will flicker or "stick" on a colors+lines image. The image it gets stuck on is based on what is on the display at the time. And it is always resolved by closing the lid and re-opening it.

I don't have any external monitor.

Is there a different way to determine whether this issue could be resolved by installing a new display? Or if it is a graphics card error? Running latest nvidia driver.

 

looks like you need to open your notebook and put the cable properly in again.

 

You probably have a loose vid cable

 

Use some kapton tape to ensure it stays in if there is none there or to replace the old tape.

 

It looks like a loose cable issue and you will need to open your laptop to fix that. Check YouTube, there should be a video telling you how to do.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I replaced the tape with some good electrical tape that was super tacky. While the display issue appears to happen less frequently, it still occurs. Is there some other connection I can check for a loose/degraded cable? What about the other end of the cord?

 

Yes, the other end into the laptop is also worth checking.

 

Thought I would post another update. I think the motherboard side was the one at fault. On the P650SG the monitor cable connects to the motherboard near the exhaust fan under the ESC key. The connector snaps in VERTICALLY, NOT HORIZONTALLY so you lift straight up on it to disconnect it. It has a black plastic tab to help you lift up on it. It wasn't taped down or anything, so I could see how it may pop loose. I blew some of the dust out from under the connector and we'll see how it goes.

 

2nd update. The display issue is intermittent but still there. My particular P650SG has a 40-pin connector and LP 156WF4-SLB5 IPS display. Ordered a new 40-pin cable for like 20 bucks and I'll see if that works. The display is like $60, so I'm going to try to fix the cable and see if that changes things.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a 40-pin 1080p IPS matte display with better than 400:1 contrast ratio?

Just make sure to stick with the panels using LVDS.

 

Well I think I may have fixed the problem for now. By adding a bit of slack in the display cable in the panel-end of things, I'm not getting the stutters anymore. Maybe the display cable just got too taunt in the display side.

For people of the future, I took the bezel off, pulled a little slack in the display cable (pulling it out of the laptop base a tad, tucking it behind the bezel, then put it back on.) No more problems so far, so maybe nothing had gone bad after all!

 

That's odd that the display cable was causing stuttering? When you say stuttering what exactly was it doing?

 

I think he means that his picture basicially freezes. Which can happen if the data from the cable suddenly stops working.

 

Maybe stuttering wasn't the right term. Danishblunt put it well, picture freezes and appears corrupted with maybe 1-2 colors exclusively of vertical lines. It would happen when the lid was moved, or seemingly at random. However making a little more slack on the panel-side of the cable appears to have quashed the issue pretty well. I'll update if it comes back. And I have a new cable coming from China if the problem returns. Glad to know it wasn't my display.

 

Did all of the fingers on the cable look ok? Worth keeping an eye on

 

I think so? But I'm going to hang on to the replacement cable just in case the problem returns.
