I got 283 actually!
980 Desktop core on 980m pcb with doubled up core power FETs. Memory voltage increased to 1.5V

I had no idea the desktop and mobile chips were pin compatible and I thought the official full 980 desktop mxms had to be specially designed from the ground up, turns out that isn't true lol what vbios did you flash your custom card with?Last edited: May 17, 2017 -
see what i mean?

Note the VRAM clocks and a single modder adding some extra parts a fully released product with safety margins does not make.ChanceJackson likes this. -

where are we on finding the vbios from the dell card and flashing it over?

Made a special one for him and called it the 'Frankenmod'.

Mind telling me how you were able to do it? did you mod the vbios from the official full 980 desktop mxm or did you modify the 980m vbios to accommodate the full fat chip? -
ChanceJackson Notebook Evangelist
No one has stepped forward to offer the vbios for the polaris 10 Radeon Pro MXM -
Neither nor...He also uses his own vRAM chips, so had to mix 3 vBIOS and do most adjustments by hand in order to get the drivers to play along.ChanceJackson and jaybee83 like this.

It would be cool if GPUs could become socket based with HBM
-
Support.2@XOTIC PC Company Representative
I be that would get a lot of traction if it happened. -

Seems very complex, I love it lol! props
Btw how do you combine vBioses? Copy bios code from one transplant it into another.. Even so why would you need more than the vBioses of the 980 Desktop MXM and the 980m MXM -
All done in hex and quiet a bit of math. One part for the vRAM Timings, one for the DIE and another for the MXM board...Stress Tech, ChanceJackson and jaybee83 like this.

The card would actually function with an unmodded 980m vBIOS when in Optimus mode. Doing direct dGPU output requires a minor device ID mod for the card to not brick the system on startup.
The main hard part for Prema was that the P150EM system BIOS didn't have dGPU eDP support built in and enabling it was buggy (card stuck in low power state, no display until Nvidia driver loaded), so he found me special vBIOS that circumvented the system BIOS problems. Then he also found me something with altered memory timings that got me an extra 200 MHz on memory. Despite the memory timings changes I still could not clock the memory as high as a 980N. It also didn't help him that I switched the core from a Clevo to an MSI board (looking back the Clevo board was recoverable and the main problem was the heatsink I built was twisting the core and breaking solder connections, making the PCB swap fully unnecessary).
I switched my memory again from 7GHz chips to 8GHz chips and they are actually around 200 MHz slower. I'm not sure if the problem is vBIOS/memory compatibility, or if my soldering job to get the memory onto my disintegrating 980m pcb is the problem.jaybee83, ChanceJackson and Prema like this. -

The problem is the limitations of the PCB routing and the memory controller. Interference from the close power circuitry along with that is limiting the maximum bus speeds.

I realy doubt it will ever work in Clevo due to EC issues, but I think it deserves some testing in MSI configurations (especially gx60 that works with every version and revision of 7970m in the world except clevo's). I'm too skeptical about this to give away 300USD, but if there's anyone who already purchased this rx480 mxm and wants to sell it, please PM me.Last edited: Aug 25, 2017

Without an eDP polaris mxm vBios I don't think you're going to get very far -
I said I am quite skeptical. But i have faith in that weird little bastard (gx60).
If I manage somehow to get wx7100 vbios I think it would fit into M17x R4.
And snakeheart uploaded an onscreen photo from p870dm (no switchable graphics as I remember) so I guess the module is not completely hopeless.
Guess if nobody PMs me, the best way to get the GPU is to buy that 8xRX480 miner from Panda guys (yet sold out). At least it'll pay for itself.Last edited: Aug 25, 2017 -

Good luck getting a wx7100 mxm vBios I tried asking around for that and any polaris mxm vBios but got no where so i hope you have better results than I.
I don't know who snakeheart is but I recall people getting screens from the taobao 480 by hooking their laptop up to an external monitor -
Yeah there were GPUz screenies on some Clevos, but that's about it before the laptops turned themselves off (EC not detecting thermal sensor readout)

But those were on external screens right? -
Maybe. All the information is in Chinese forums. Hard to google. At least now we know that standard GPU-Z won't download Dell wx7100's rom. A special version or full BIOS dump may be required.ChanceJackson likes this.

The Original Zotac 1070n's vBios would not let GPU-Z back it up either, I had to use nvflash to do it so I imagine atiflash will need to be used for the wx7100's vBiosLast edited: Aug 27, 2017Imv likes this. -

for the ROM. It appears to be too small (59kb). However all parameter readings appear to be in place (checked by Anoraks ATOMBIOSReader).
He has some problems with fan speed control. Once he writes the model of his laptop please care to help If I won't have enough knowledge. Better PM me not to flood this thread.Last edited: Aug 27, 2017ChanceJackson likes this. -
512kb version is online.
Same readings as of 59kb one.
Laptop model is M17x R4. HWinfo64 freezes and won't allow the system to shut down in normal way.
It has separate gpu and cpu ceries as Clevo P-series.
Anyone dealt with this problem before?ChanceJackson likes this. -

Sounds like the BIOS is not using the hooks HWinfo expects. You would have to talk to the developer and try another program perhaps? It's possible the Vbios may not expose that data depending on how it has been modified.

Now we just need someone to flash a taobao rx 480 with this vBios right?
-
The developer is aware of the problem and can't fix it. Will try to look for solution.
Yes, that's right!ChanceJackson likes this. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It might not be exposing the data to the OS at all then.
-
I think this is the problem. Moreover, HWinfo is the only program that ever worked in Alienware laptops.

I want the RX 580 in my ranger if the price is only 300 or so...

That's not going to happen really.

If they could get the power/heat down in a future generation your dream might come true, but I don't see it happening yet. I'll stay optimistic though.
-
Personally I dont mind the power or heat. I believe my laptop can handle it, but I understand the position since that may not be the case with interested market share.
The 780m will hold me for a while, considering my last DD had the m5100 in it. Even though I had a weaker card, I enjoyed the AMD software suite. Its much quicker when I need to access it and applies the settings without having the restart the game. The only thing that I can appreciate in the nvidia software suite is the ability to set custom resolutions. It may be because I had a workstation card but I couldnt do that before. This is easily resolved with CRU though so its not exactly a critical attribute.
It seems AMD is completely uninterested in the enthusiast mobile market though. They have enough supply problems with just the desktop 580's as it stands... -
Support.2@XOTIC PC Company Representative
I think it's more they're dipping a toe in right now, and starting with desktop before moving back into competing in mobile markets is probably a smart move. -
To be fair, I'd probably do the same.
As a consumer though, it still sucks lolLast edited: Nov 13, 2017 -

Mostly if you're due for an upgrade. If no, waiting for a release down the road is the best option. -
Im not in a position to upgrade at the moment anyways.
There is the 1070 of course but if I can, I'd like to stick to the red side
If the option never comes then 1070 it is!
-

I'd even wait on that, they're still recovering from cryptocurrency prices. I like not really having a side in that fight, so I can just pick whatever will work best for me at the time.
-
That would require both Supply and Demand to work in our favor.
Red side is more of a preference, but my functions come first. If AMD is absent then ill just go with what is available. -

It's amazing how long ago I was getting my hands on one of the first 7970M cards....

ahh, those were the days...

We have not had a big AMD mobile launch since really.

Wouldn't be upset if that changed soon. Though it looks like they're being more careful on the mobile side.
