Sometimes under full load the powerbrick gets a bit loud, loader then my PC using fn+3 low fan power. Is that normal?

What model laptop do you have?

I have a Sager NP5791 and the powerbrick makes a quiet wining sound which I believe is normal. I think most (all?) bricks make at least a little noise. You're running a pretty strong current through them after all.

Yes, it is one crazy high-powered adapter, the buzz is normal but make sure its not in an enclosed area and away from other electronics as it gets very warm. I also keep it on its side so more surface area is in the air for cooling. helps just a little bit.

All things considered, I guess I`m lucky, my powerbrick doesn`t overheat nor does it sing opera.

If you wanna be really nice to your brick you can get one of those large APC surge protectors that manage power more efficiently than a normal surge protector, and they claim to save on power bills too.

Mine is noisy too. Does yours have a fan in it as well? I know that mine does, but some other 5793 users don't have that.

Mine made a lot of noise when it was right on my desk, cause it would vibrate when the fan kicked in. to mitigate some of that noise, i put a sock in between the brick and the desk :3 ...that cut down some of the noise

When did they start putting fans in them? Mine doesn't have one and it can get pretty how after a gaming session.

I see it. Mine doesn't even have a vent. Sager must have put a fan in the power brick to compensate for the increased power requirements of the 8800m with the release of the 5793. I can't think of any other reasonable explanation for why some would have fans, and other wouldn't. It wasn't even an option when I got my 5791.

Does it really matter though? Even with the fan the power brick can get really hot at times.

I think they just released this. There a sticker on my brick that says June 08

    I'm sure that if the fan were absolutely necessary to ensure that your brick doesn't explode, you would have it. This is probably just some new luxury thing that they threw in for fun, and we happened to be lucky to order when it was newish ^^;

I guess contacting the reseller you bought it from and asking for a swap or something could work. I guess they put the fan in there for a reason.

So, instead of arguing amongst yourselves, why doesn't some intrepid poster actually ask their reseller and/or Sager?

The 8800M GTX actually needs less power than my 7950GTX , and I don`t have a fan.
    Yes, mass confusion :D
    Did, awaiting reply.
Hmm, so it`s a definite new adition. I guess that sucks up power too...

My AC adapter makes a humming noise when it's plugged into the laptop. When I turn on the laptop, the noise goes away.

Mine is Mar 08, it gets pretty damn warm, but I can only hear noise from it if I hold my ear next to it... that is one damn creepy sound, like those creepy sounds that come from a Tesla coil.

Like Callidor said, its probably just a luxury- perhaps to lower heat and maybe to increase life, but hot bricks like this have been around a while- the Xbox brick is VERY hot but I know people that have had them for a while with no problems. If the earlier powerbricks are an exploding risk or something, then we would be getting a load of recall messages...

I think I might contact Sager and see how much one of those new "fanned" powerbricks cost, never hurts to have a spare... ;)
