Hello, I have a Sager NP9170 and the black plastic casing in the inside of my power jack, cracked and came off. I stupidly/carelessly kept using it and shortly after when it was plugged in, the cord touched down on my motherboard(since the casing was gone) and my laptop instantly shut off and gave off that weird death smell.
The board still looked okay(except for the jack), so I ordered a new identical power jack from Sager (pretty pricey $30 incl ship) and had it soldered on by a local tech shop. When I put it back together it, it didn't start. No lights come on or anything. When I first tried it, I think there were battery/psu lights on that were yellow for a few seconds and then faded. Is my board dead? Could it be a blown fuse or maybe the part wasn't soldered correctly?
Any tips or advice on what it could be and possible solutions including places that could repair this are appreciated! Thanks! Creative IT USA in Denver said they could fix it for $300, has anyone had any experience w them?

Did you try powering it off just using the battery when it happened? If it gave no signs of life at that point the board was always dead and needed replacing.

haha oh yea, I'm dumb. I definitely tried it on battery after that and nothing happened. Could a savy tech place repair a dead board? Where can I get a replacement board? Unfortunately I have the 7970m..

It is possible but typically more cost effective just to replace the board and reinstall the components. I'd price out both options

Hello, Sager said they don't sell motherboards, but I can send it in and they will replace it for $250 (motherboard) +$95 labor! So this is probably what I will do. Hopefully this helps other people!
I'm kind of surprised at how cheap the power jack was. I never gamed on this machine, just used it a couple hrs a day for a year or two playing online poker, but the connection was always a little loose. -

Unfortunately Sager will never send out a motherboard alone. They always require the computer be sent in.

You may have a had a slight fault from the factory or it got knocked without you realising. The replacement price is pretty fair and it does require a total teardown and testing so that's a fair price. You should see what someone lice Acer charges!

yea, true, I thought it was a fair price and I don't have to deal w screwing it up myself! Still a lot cheaper than a new one. If I was going to get a new one, I'd want a 4k one, but I think too many apps and things would annoy me until its more mainstream and polished. I kind of wish laptops were more like desktops, with standard sizes, so you could customize more things(DIY-i like building), but I guess technology improves too fast and something thinner/lighter is always being built.

That's the price of the custom small as possible form factor.

I had a similar problem with my np9170. Well I was pretty much using it as a desktop since I messed up attachment from LCD screen to motherboard and didn't want to purchase a new one. The power jack-cord interface was extremely loose and the power jack had a black circular ring that cracked and fell out.
At some point, my motherboard fried. I know this for sure because I tested the voltages of the power cable, which were fine, and the soldered the power cable to my motherboard... -
Oh yeah, to add what happened to it- I just parted out the 3610qm and the 7970m. I still have the rest of it lying around...
Power Jack for Sager NP9170 may have fried my board..
