My shiny new Sager 5793 has a slight problem. When I power up, the power management defaults to high performance. I'd prefer balanced, as that allows the CPU to throttle down when not doing much. But I can change the damned thing until I'm (choose colorful metaphor here) to no avail. How can I make balanced my default. Thanks in advance.

For that you want to get RM Clock. Its a device that you can mess around with voltages, i currently have mines listed in my sig which gets me idle temps of 25 and on load 38. You can also set it up so that on idle it will go down to whatever speed you choose at what voltage you want it to be. You can also do that on battery power and set the highest speed you want it to go. So for mines on AC Power i have set to 8x-12x Mult and then on Batter i have it set to SUPERLFM - 8x Multipliers. And the program will change your CPU speed depending on the values you have allowed it to change to and how intensive the task is. So when you game or watch a movie RM Clock will throttle your speed to max.
http://cpu.rightmark.org/ is where you can dl the program
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235824 is a quick guide to using rm clock/undervolting. Dont worry about messing around with it, the worst that can happen is a BSOD after that just restart and choose a higher voltage. I've had about 4 BSODs while I found my stable voltage.
RM Clock settings with a few Vista and Screen tweaks nets me 2 1/2 hours of battery while doing non intensive 3d tasks i.e gaming. -
RMclock is the way to go.
