I'm in the market for a good surge protector as well, was thinking about something like this Amazon.com: APC 100-240V Surge Protector for Notebook (PNOTEPROC6): Electronics
all of my UPS are from apc and never had problems so I'm hoping it would be the same for this kind of protector. -

Brand doesn't matter too much, but there are a few things to look for:
1) Joule rating. First and foremost, this indicates the size of a surge that it can protect against.
2) Type of protection used. Most home devices use MOV type circuits which are low cost, but can fail over time. You need to replace this type of suppressor every few years to guarantee that it works when you need it.
3) Outlet Arrangement. The better devices have outlet spacing for transformer blocks which makes them more convenient.
4. Cord length. Simple, but you don't want a short cord when you need a long one -

500 is bare min, mdp 500 has like 1080, there a good ones from monster with 2000joule rating and stuff. I am a monster fan, I have a monster av for my 42 panasonic tv, xbox and dvd player at my gf's place!
Had absolutely no issues. mdp series are designed for laptops and pc, might be a marketing thing, who cares it works!

reviews saying it tends to get loose so I just bought a generic belkin surge protector instead -
For $20 this is a good value, relatively good protection for its price range
