I'm VERY interested in the new 5760...however there's the issue of convincing my parents that Sager isn't some fly-by-night company (I'm probably getting my college PC as a highschool graduation present), and it seems to me that the sagernotebook.com site might be the easiest site to convince them of. Any thoughts?

You could show them the Sager website, then tell them that you'd prefer to buy from a dealer because you get a more personalized ownership experience, and the prices are less.
PowerNotebooks reputation is unbelievable:
http://www.resellerratings.com/seller_info.pl?seller_id=1980
If that doesn't convince them . . .

Sager has been in buisness since 1985 providing high end laptops that most of the mainstream manufacturers simply cannot duplicate. To get an idea about their history, go to http://www.powernotebooks.com/info/sager_profile.php
Oh, and thanks for the kind words ChazMan421 -
Do they take PayPal? It'd probably be easier for me to convince my parents to go through them if they had the security of PayPal when making the purchase.
-
"Security" of PayPal??? ROTFL! Why do you think people use credit cards when they buy through PayPal from eBay?
Yes, they do take credit cards and you should pay by CC, if you don't know them and trust them enough to sleep well at night. That 2% discount should never be enough to risk the other 98. It's the price you pay for peace of mind. (No offense, Donald, even if you are one of the highest rated seller on RR, and that's no small feat.) -
So you're saying just use a good CC company like American Express when buying it that will be willing to help you out if you get screwed?
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
I think the talk of 'getting screwed' is ridiculous . . paying by wire transfer is not something I'd do for just any reseller, only the trusted ones like PowerNotebooks, PCT, etc. You can save yourself 2.5% easily.
Chaz -
Look, I've done the research and am confident that these are reliable sellers. However, my parents are skeptical of anything they haven't heard of, and they're ultimately the ones paying. Do you now understand why I'm being a little uptight?--Basically, I'm trying to cover my bases so my parents don't push towards a Dell or an Apple, things they've heard of.
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
Oh no I understand what you're saying - paying by a credit card can be counted as 'safer,' certainly. If that is what makes you and/or your parents feel more comfortable, then go for it.
Maybe in your situation it would be better to go with a Credit card.
Chaz -
With reputable sellers like powernotebooks.com, AmEx should be enough.
You should not believe a word I am saying and do your own "backup check", reading about powernotebooks.com anywhere you can. But if they are as good as their 1000+ reviews on resellerratings, you are in for a treat.
Disclaimer: I have never bought anything from Powernotebooks, so anything I say is just hearsay. -
Heres an easy way to do it.
Show your parents the Resellerratings.com ratings of Dell/Apple/HP/etc and then show them the ratings for Powernotebooks.com, Discountlaptops.com, PCTorque.com and ISTNC.com.
That alone should be a good indication for those that do not know much.
I will even do teh work for you.
Ratings via Reselleratings.com as of 04/04/06
Company Name: 6mth Rating/Lifetime Rating
Alienware ---------- 5.89/7.33
Dell ----------------- 2.75/4.37
Discountlaptops ---- 9.89/9.98
Falcon Northwest - NA/8.75
Hypersonic--------- 6.19/8.45
ISTNC -------------- 9.79/9.95
PCTorque ---------- 10.0/9.93
PowerNotebooks --- 10.0/9.99
Sager --------------- 6.67/5.0
VoodooPC ---------- 8.91/9.53
From what I have heard and read.
Dell Customer Support is not very good
Sager support is just slightly better.
But if you want the best support from Sager, it is best to buy your Sager from PCTorque, Discountlaptops or Powernotebooks or other resellers.
PS:
I think everyone hre has just about tried their best to help you out.
No need to be rude -
One thing I learned repairing my friends' computers is: when you buy a PC, you don't pay only for the product, but also for post-sales support. It's not important how nice people are pre-sales, but how they will stand by you when bad things happen. When I buy insurance for my car, I don't look for the cheapest, but for the most reliable one.
You might pay more at PN than at Dell Home, but you get what you pay for, both in notebook and in support.
</sermon>
P.S. He's not rude. He's just careful, and that's good.
P.P.S. Regarding PN, there is at least one review on RR in which the customer tells how he called Donald (PowerNotebooks) for a Sager problem, and he teleconferenced with Sager and with the client, solving the problem.
To be paranoid, there is one thing that makes me suspicious about the PN reviews: too many reviewers have only 1 review on RR. -
Maybe people have only just recently swarmed to get notebooks from PN with the overall progress and advancement of notebooks, etc. and maybe they just got laptops from them and they are so good they all have no need for another
Whatever the truth may be I feel confident in PN's support and overall product. I 'm not one to be suspious. -

You will find that most people posting at ResellerRatings.com only have 1 post, mainly because they can only post once per reseller, no matter how many computers they buy. It is not like it is a forum where you can post as many times as you want.
The other reason is as Chris583 suggests that people only tend to buy a computer every few years.
Also, notice that people have been posting ratings about PN for over 6 years (we are just starting our 8th year in business), so it is not like we have accumulated over 1,000 ratings just recently... -
Paladin
All this time I have been reading this forum and just now I realized that you are from PN. I guess I was not looking at bottom portions of the posts. It looks strange to me all the time that you have vast knowledge about things. I know we have other laptop guru here (Chaz) and you guys rock. I have learned so much about laptops. However, I am still shopping around and still trying to find price justification for 5760.
Thanks for all the info and replies. On a side note: I asked that in other thread so please forgive me - What are Sagers made of (plastic?) if so, does it feel like plastic
Thanks again
Regards,

All laptops are made of polycarbon alloy which is a very sturdy and lightweight plastic. Some have carbon fiber alloy, magnesium alloy or brushed aluminum LCD covers or other case parts, but even those cases are made of polycarbon alloy for the rest of the case parts.
I have no way to know how to answer your question about does it feel like plastic...you know...if it walks like a duck... But if you are asking does it feel like some cheap plastic toy...no way...these polycarbon alloys are tough. -
I finally made my purchase of a 5760 from Power Notebooks and I have to say that it was a very pleasurable experience. Any question that I had were addressed by Don (or is it Donald…sorry) and Ron. Ron was the initial person who contacted me when I deciding on what type of laptop to purchase. He was very helpful with all my questions. I have to also say that Power Notebooks was the only reseller that contacted me in a timely manner on any of my questions. Ron responded the same day to my e-mails where other resellers were taking 2 to 3 days for a response.
The day I made my purchase I decided to call for two reasons: first was to make sure that I got a live person, and second was to address the last couple of questions I had on the warranty. I got a chance to talk to Don and he was very informative on both the Sager model and the extended warranty.
Again I have to say that I really enjoyed working with Power Notebooks on my purchase and I have 100% confidence that I will be getting the same type of service after the sale.
I will post a mini review when I get the 5670
Now I am off to research for a backpack. -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Yup...it's Donald.
It's kind of funny. Around here whenever someone calls and asks for Don...the staff knows it is a salesman
Anyway, thank you so much for your kind comments. -
Awesome blued0g!
I have had experience communicating with Powernotebooks and they ar indeed excellent in communitcation
(I actually directly contacted MANY resellers prior to my purchase, even upto trying to contact Clevo themselves in Taiwan but unfortunately I do not speak Taiwanese so it was a short lived call)
As for Backpacks, there is a nice thread about it here:
Links to Notebook Bag Makers, Dealers and Reviews
A couple of companies that I have not seen in the list there are:
http://www.axio-usa.com/
http://us.kensington.com/html/1415.html
http://www.pakuma.com/
http://www.booqbags.com/index.html
I was about to buy either the Axio Forza or Hybrid or the Booqbag Python XL.
But I stumbled across the Kensington Contour and bought it instead.
I actually just received it yesterday in anticipation of my 5760's arrival in a few weeks
Here is an actual review of this backpack I just found in this webite: http://www.notebookreview.com/printArticle.asp?newsid=2425 -

Congrats on ordering the bluedog.
Answering the build quality question - the lid on my Sager is actually constructed of aluminum, and has a very solid and high-quality feel to it. The rest is sturdy and thick plastic that feels durable and well made.
Chaz -
Dang, I can not wait for puppy to arrive. I am ready to start loading software and start running some test.
Thanks for the links on the backpacks. I was actually looking at the booq python XL but got sticker shock when I saw the price tag. I will check out the Kinsington Contour this week at the store.
Let me know how the 5760 fits in the backpack you get it.
*I am going to wait by the mailbox for UPS to arrive…LOL -
LOL.
I think all of us in the Pre-order club are VERY anxious for this baby to arrive.
I actually have been going nuts buying accessories for it.
I already bought the following a few days ago for my laptops arrival:
- Kensington Contour Backpack
- Windows XP MCE 2005 w/ UR2 - OEM
- Razer Copperhead - Tempest Blue
- XP MCE Remote IR w/ Receiver
- Windows XP MCE 2005 w/ UR2 - OEM (Putting my XP Home on his Desktop and putting XP MCE on my desktop to turn it into a Media Center in my living room
)
- Belkin Pre-N wireless router
- Belkin Pre-N desktop wireless adapter
And possibly a Webcam for my desktop so I can hook it up to do video chat w/ my family when I am at work, or score some brownie points for my wife by having her able to Vieo chat with her family 600 miles away in NC.
And this is what I just bought for my sons room last night:
BTW
My son is only 3 yrs old turning 4 this August.
May ask, why build a 3 yr old his own Desktop PC.
Well, my son is very smart and not just saying that cuz he is my son.
He already finished Lego Star Wars PC Game by himself (minus 2-3 levels he needed my help on) able to login to his user account on my PC using his own password, and able to DL and install some games and go to some sites I have added in his Bookmarks.
Sometimes we fight over the PC so I got an old Desktop from my aunts and gonna fix it and hopefully it isn't too old that it is obsolete for todays basic PC needs. -
Nice setup
If I ever get back into BF2 or another online game I will definitely look at the Razer. I will be curious to hear how it performs with some of the games. I am going to order a Bluetooth mouse from Newegg this week that I can use when I am moving around the house.
Are you thinking about a sleeve for you laptop or does the backpack have enough padding?
I think I may wait on the LapCool4. I want to see how hot it gets when I put it under a full load.
Soon you will have a gaming buddy (your son) when you get all the computers hooked up and online. My son, 7 months old, is a big fan of the keyboard. My wife just shakes her head when I have let him bang on the keys while we listen to Disney tunes. It is amazing how fast kids can pick up on the computer.
I was debating about adding the Maxtor dualhead 2go to my order since I have a 19” LCD at home. I e-mailed Ron (at powernotebooks.com) and he replied, “….realize that all of our laptops are dual head capable, meaning they all can run one external monitor as it is using the laptops current video card. They Matrox Dual head is like a splitter of the external monitor port giving you in affect two ports plus the laptop screen! The matrox uses your laptop video card for splitting the video card….” This was good news to me since I have become a fan of dual monitors at work. Nothing better than being able to do your work on one screen while gaming on the other At least until the boss walks around…LOL -
Ya I debated on getting a Microsoft Bluetooth Mouse at 1 point.
But after extensive research on the best gaming mouse, it came down to the Logitech G5/G7 or Razer Copperhead.
I already own a G7 on my desktop and decided to buy the Razer Copperhead to fully see which is the Best of the Best 1st hand.
I will then decide for myself which goes on the laptop and which stays on the desktop lol.
At this time I LOVE the G7.
It is the BEST wireless mouse I have used EVER.
The big bonus of it is this:
- * 1 rechargeable battery in the mouse
* 2nd rechargeable battery charging in the base station.
* Switching batteries on the fly can take you literally 1-2 seconds!
As for the Backpack:
Yes, my initial choice as the Axio Forza/Hybrid or the Booqbag Python.
I would have bought either 1 until I accidentally stumbled upon the Kensington Contour.
It does have decent padding for the laptop.
I do wish I can find a decent laptop sleeve that can fit in the laptop compartmnt of the Kensington.
I am still in a search for it but not very optimistic on that part.
As for the LapCool4:
I do HIGHLY suggest to wait until you get your laptop to decide if you need it or not.
I just got shopping bug from my wife and overly excited why I have that option open at this time.
Either way, it woukld make a nice desktop hub
@Maxtor Dualhead
Agreed, it seems liek you may not really need it.
If you are triple screening maybe.
But the truth is, with Core Duo CPU, you should technically hav no problems just Alt-tabbing from a ganme at work
@offsprings
My wife actually makes fun of me that I turned our son into a dork like his daddy
When I 1st met my wife I was this Gung-ho Marine and she didn't know about my Computer Gaming Fetish lol.
But ya, kids today learn so fast.
It must be the water lol
I actually need to buy a new keyboard for my sons desktop I am trying to fix as I just realized the old KB was thrown out due to him covring it with syrup when he was eating pancakes on my desk while playing his games on my desktop.
gave me th reason to replac it with a Logitech G15, but I shoulda put it in the closet and just cleaned it up to save me 10 bucks lol - * 1 rechargeable battery in the mouse

I use dual monitors with my Sager - the laptop is secondary, my desktop NEC is primary. Works well.
About the Razer Copperhead; this is the best mouse I have ever owned. Logitech G5? Doesn't touch it by a long shot. Logitech makes nice mice, but for gaming, stick to Razer.
Looks like the upgrade prices are very reasonable on the Sager NP5760, especially since the reduced Core Duo prices are taken into account. Everybody seems to be ordering a similar configuration, looks great.
Preferred place to buy a Sager?
