I currently have a Sager NP9262 with a (possibly) fried Nvidia 9800m GT inside. After contacting Sager, they recommended upgrading to the 260m GTX.

I have ordered the card, which looks like this:

but noticed that it is missing the silver sheets pictured here:
    AnandTech - Gallery - Sager NP9262 - Dissected - 12 Photos

what are these sheets called and how are they applied? I am assuming they are heat sinks? Do they need to be ordered through Sager or are they available online?

Sorry if this seems like a really stupid question, I've never done this before.

Looks like a "heat shield." They show up on the Clevo D901C disassembly guide as well.

I don't believe they are available online, or at least not that I've seen.

Thanks, any idea if that means I would need them on the new card as well?

Probably. I would suggest contacting the seller to see if they have any spares left over just in case. :)

You need MXM 2.1 version one

Not MXM 3.0 one as your picture shows.

Notice the connector of MXM 2.1 III-HE crads.

Besides, I can't believe those guys form sager would be so ignorant that gave you incompatible one. You should contact them again. Maybe wrong pictures they provided.

^ Very nice catch! I didn't even notice that. Shame on me.

Funny, I've always called them heat shields :D But I stand corrected, thermal pads are the name. Thanks for the info guys.

The silver bits are not thermal pads. They are basically heat shields, but are not necessary. What IS necessary is thermal pads on the RAM chips (as pictured on the top 4 ram chips of the first card in the anandtech photo - blue colour) and thermal paste on the GPU core

You could peel off the heat shield from your fried 9800M GT and try to place it on the 260M GTX. I wouldn't use anything else.

Sager has given you a 260M GTX card that has not been sold officially with D901C. It was only offered with M570TU/ETU and M860TU/ETU, hence the missing heat shield.

when my 9800gt died it was replaced by supplier within 10 minutes and no bios was changed and its still going strong so these two cards are compatible.

the 260gtx are hard to come by now and are quite pricey if you can find one.
    good luck
