So which screen do you M570TU owners prefer? The new 280M should be quite powerful, but I'm not so sure if it'll be handling games for the next 2 years at 1920 x 1200? Heck, I'm sure Crysis will already start the trend of WSXGA. Is the image quality or brightness any different between the two? Suggestions? :p

Also, do you guys use a cooler or think it even needs one? I've got a Zalman NC2000 from the previous laptop...

I`d go for WSXGA definitely, native res for a longer time.
However, havina a WUXGA screen is nice. But it`s far too big for a 17 inch screen, I`ve gotten to that conclusion because I had to increase the DPI to make everything readable from 3 feet...

Really, it all depends what you are looking for. I have been using a 1920 x 1200 screen for 4 years and I absolutely love it. I like the small icons and the amount of viewing space that I have on my screen. I work on a lot of large spreadsheets for work and not having to constantly scroll back and forth is a huge plus. Not that 1680 x 1050 would be a huge difference, but it would definitely be noticeable. If you are going to be watching Blu-Ray or downloading 1080p quality videos then the 1920 x1200 will also be a big plus.

For gaming at native res the 1680 x 1050 will definitely be more future proof. Upgrading the GPU a year down the road may buy you a little time, but eventually you will reach the point where you can not run current games at native res with max setting on the 1920 x 1200 screen. Honestly though, that is going to happen whatever the screen. Maybe you get an extra 6 months out of the lower res but then you will end up having to lower the setting for that too.

Long story short, if you want it to be able to game at max setting and native res for the longest period of time; go for the 1680 x 1050. If you want it to be a media powerhouse with the maximum viewing area for work, that will still max out most games; then go with the 1920 x 1200.

    I personally just order a 5797 with the 1920 x 1200.

Everyone has different eyes. I suggest going to a B&M store such as Best Buy and look at the 17 in. notebooks and try them on 1920x1200 and then 1680x1050. This will give you a little clue as to how it's going to be.

Well with the GTX 280M, I would recommend 1920x1200. The 9800M GTX didn't have enough power for me to justify moving to the higher res lcd.

If Crysis is big on your list, or want to game natively in the future, I'd recommend staying to the 1680x1050. Easier on your eyes, and higher FPS at that res.

If you want to take full advantage of that GPU, don't go with a CPU less than the T9800. I'd recommend the QX9300 and OC it to 3GHz.

    I vote for WSXGA+ and the T9800.

If you want to watch lots of movies go for the WUXGA, else go with the WSXGA+.
The best tho would be going to a computer shop and see for yourself some 17'' with both the res.

And nevermind the dual core it's a thing of the past now go for the QX9300!!

Well guys, I've ordered it with the P9600, WSXGA+, 4GB DDR3, 320GB 7200 RPM. Crysis is definitely on the list, my previous HDX didn't do it justice, and later games will be just as if not more intense. 1080p was perfectly readable even on that 16", but I won't mind slightly lower. My home pc (office pc, not gaming) monitor is 20" and WSXGA and it's sharp/fine enough. I got the P9600 because of the great price/performance ratio and it should be an easy sell when I later upgrade to the hottest quad :D

well if your playing more intensive games like Crysis, WSXGA+ is the way to go. However; remember not all games are that intensive, I bet games like Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, and future mmorpgs will be able to be ran at WUXGA at very fluid FPS.

i think another question should be wether the lcd of the 5797 would downscale effectively. if it does then wuxga would then be a better choice
i thinke the 5797 has the same lcd as a 5793
maybe we can ask the 5793 owners

when playing games, I think the GPU does the downscaling.

So what about the cooler? I suppose I should just wait until I have the laptop and test it myself... but if I don't need it now, I may want it in the future if I get an extreme cpu?

thats what i was afraid of too.
with my laptop, when i switch to non native resolution you see the difference but its not that bad though.
however ive been hearing in this forum that the sager screens dont downscale well.

I doubt you will need a cooler, the Sager NP5797's chassis have some amazing cooling capabilities for a laptop.
