    Hello,

I recently purchased a w860cu without a wireless card because it would be cheaper to buy it myself and intall it and because I think it's fun.

I bought the intel 6300 half height mini card.

    Problem is, it won't work.

The driver installs. If you go to device manager, it is there under network adapters and says it is working properly.

However, when you go to control panel > network and sharing center > manage wireless networks, none appear. I've tried adding one manually and it gives me an "unexpected error' message.

My other laptop has an older intel 4xxx series wireless card and it is still working.

My desktop's wireless card recently just stopped working. Didn't care because it's also wired. But I just looked at that too and it appears to have the same symptoms, card installed and seen in device manager, but no network connections seen. I live in a densely populated area and there are always multiple connections that can/should be seen.

I've installed the intel PROset utility and that didn't help. I ran the intel diagnostics tool, and it failed on the first test "hardware".

Since both the laptop and the card is new, I don't know which one is at fault, or if it is the way I'm installing it. I installed it in the other laptop and got similar symptoms too.

The fact that two computers seem to have similar problems makes me think it is something else, like the router or modem. But then why would the other laptop still work and why would no other connections show up.

I feel like I'm running around in circles trying to find the problem.

Any ideas? Am I just installing it wrong?

Thanks for any and all ideas.

    Let's go over the checklist.

Did you remove all software pertaining to the 5300 prior to removing the card from your notebook and installing the 6300?

Did you download the latest driver for the 6300 (Not PROSet) from Intel's website?

Did you make sure the card is turned on and the radio is turned on?

Did you buy the 6300 on eBay from a Chinese seller?

I bought a barebones w860cu without any card. I installed Win 7 home premium x64 myself, as I got it without any os. Problem one: the laptop never had a wireless card, so I don't know if it is the card or the laptop.

Therefore, there were no drivers to uninstall. I downloaded the latest drivers from Intel and tried those first (no Proset, just the drivers). I had the problem.

Then I downloaded the driver with proset and tried that (uninstall driver in device manager and uninstall proset in programs. Same problem.

I even tried the drivers that came on the disk with the card. Same issue.

I know about the fn+11 tried that. Turned it off, turned it on. No difference.

I did not buy it on e-bay. I bought it from a local merchant here in Montreal. But I don't know where they bought it. First time I buy from them. They had them in stock.

I don't understand why one laptop would work, another laptop won't and my desktop exhibiting same symptom as loptop with a third wireless card (card installed and "working properly" in device manager but no connections detected).

I'm going to uninstall everything and retry it this evening. Right now I don't know if it is the laptop, the wireless card, or something wrong with modem/router.

I don't have another half-height mini wireless card to test in the clevo, in order to reduce the possible problems.

But if my desktop is having similar problems with its wireless card, there might be something wrong with the modem/router. (I initially just thought that it had died, but now that the 6300 is not working either, it might not be dead)

But if it is the modem/router, why would the other laptop still work?

I'm left thinking maybe because I set up a homegroup with all three computers, that might be screwing things up.

Plugging a lan cable in to either the clevo or my desktop, I get internet access, so nothing wrong with the lan ports.

Looks like I will have to start over from scratch tonight. I'll unistall everything and reinstall.

What was that I said about building one's own machine being fun? :D

Did you ensure that you are using the correct antennae connections? There should be 3 wifi antennae, 1 tv aerial and 1 bluetooth aerial that all look very similar in the chassis...

You said you installed windows yourself??? did you install all the chipset drivers that came with the laptop? if not you will not be able to actually turn the radio/wifi on using Fn keys until chipset drivers are installed.

I'm definitely using the right antennae connections as they're clearly labeled in the clevo.

And I also installed the chipset drivers and all other drivers from the installation disk, except the 6300 wifi card drivers which I got from Intel.

I should get the chance to test the card in a different laptop tonight.

If it installs the driver but fails the hardware diagnostic test and can't find any network connections like on the clevo, I'm going to RMA it.

    Thanks for everyones input.

If there is a problem, I don't think it is the clevo, although, it being a new machine, it has never had a wifi card installed. Bios is 1.00.11, ec/kbc is 1.00.06.

I see on the clevo bios thread that the ec/kbc version is 1.00.10 while mine is 1.00.06. Does anyone think that it is the ec that is causing the problem?

    Thanks.

The lower EC/KBC series could be an issue so you should update that as well...

I'm having different issues with my barebones from RJTech and had to send it back for them to try and fix...

While buying a barebones seemed like a good idea, it appears the barebones may have more problems because they may not be fully tested before being shipped...

funny thing is most people buy barebones so they can only blame themselves for problems. You get a guarantee on the barebone not all the stuff you bought from random people on ebay.

PunkahJr- where did you buy the wifi card from?

I bought the card from micro@informatique located in a suburb just south of Montreal. Who knows where they got it from.

Who said anything was purchased on ebay? I purchased all parts; CPU, Memory, Hard Drive, etc from reputable vendors - all new and 100% guaranteed...

My problem is with the W860CU box, not the parts I purchased and installed...

LOL, maybe you need a reading lesson, I only had one defective laptop and am waiting for a replacement...

Plus, I am pretty sure I am qualified to install a computer part or two...
