so i just tried a sample here Strongene-HEVC/H.265 Encoder . the only player can handle is powerdvd 14 ultra. however after 5 sec my p170em suddenly shout out "beep beep beep" and shut down itself after another 10sec.
just curious how come just playing a video file can cause hard shut down?
my poweredvd 14 can play other files without problem

I figured out what happen. There is something block the gpu fan and prevent it to spin. I did not set powerdvd 14 to power saving. The shut down is cause by the mother board detect the gpu fan is not spinning (not caused by overheat of gpu as it already beep beep beep even gpu is just 7x C)

edit: powerdvd 14 still activate 7970m even i set it to power saving when playing the h.265. don't know why

Non of the current gen Video cards support H.265 Codec hardware acceleration.

Don't be so sure about that...

That's on my Inspiron 17R with a 2450M chip (2.5GHz) and an Intel HD 3000... VLC already has massive overhead so the CPU usage sounds about right for you.

I used the elecard video so it would appear they got CPU utilization down.

Without knowing the bit rates of the videos it would be hard to make utilisation comparisons, ideally it would be of both playing the same video.

I did try the "Big Buck Bunny" @ 1080p, 1713kbps which REQUIRES their player and is the subject of the video in that thread:

    Average of 16%

For such a crappy laptop, that's not bad.

Here are the results on dual monitor with the video going to my 1080p TV:

Here's the full size (its hard to see - its 17% average)

I don't know what the deal was with those other people but if my 2450M and HD 3000 can handle it... yeah.
