    Copying this from another forum:

I have a Sager NP8150 laptop that I've owned for almost 2 years now with a Radeon 6990m graphics card. Today, the screen started flashing and flickering random colors. Along with this the screen even split in 2 (as in the rightmost portion moved over to the left side of the screen). After doing this for a second and going even more crazy when I tried to move my mouse it just went to a screen with lines. I rebooted and could not even get the display to come up on my laptop. I plugged it into the HDMI connected to my TV and it displayed but was still acting goofy.

So after this, I decided to try and unplug/replug in the graphics card as I heard that it could help. Since then I've been able to start up my laptop and use it for up to hours with no problems, but eventually it starts acting like it did before with the screen flickering/flashing/splitting/etc...

I also tried to uninstall and reinstall the driver but it didn't seem to help. Which brings me to another weird problem which is when I try to open Catalyst I get the message "No amd graphics driver is installed, or the amd driver is not functioning properly".

So is my graphics card on its last leg or is there a chance it could be software related?

    UPDATE:
So it kept crashing and going crazy all last night. Eventually the screen went black when booted and I could only see it through HDMI (with thick blue lines running down the screen) and it would only boot into safe mode. So finally I uninstalled the drivers again and for the time being it seems to be working. I'll keep you guys updated but if it's working without the AMD drivers, does this mean the drivers are the problem? If so, how can I make sure to do a completely clean install of them? When I just tried to reinstall them last time, the same issues came back.

Also it's not overheating. A BSOD appeared once during all the times it freaked out, but usually the screen just goes black or blue or black with green lines running down vertically and stays like that.

as soon as it does it again can you take a picture using a phone and post the image on here.
vertical lines are never a good thing and normally means a dying gpu.
if the lines are still there after plugging into an external monitor then thats almost defo a dying card.
my 9800 just froze with a sound loop and after a reboot it was totally dead so hopefully someone else can advise on intermitent lines.

Sorry to say that, but it seem that your graphic card is dying... do you know that you can upgrade your laptop with 7970hm ?

The weird thing is, is that I'm running it now without the AMD drivers installed and everything seems to be working fine. I've had no issues thus far. It really seems like a dying graphics card, but at the same time, why would uninstalling the drivers fix it if it's dying? I don't really know enough to say for sure, just where my thought process is. Really don't want to have to shell out the extra money for another mobile graphics card unless I have to.

My 6990m did the exact same thing before it died. I did the oven trick to revive it but upgraded to 7970m later anyways.

You don't encounter the problem since you had uninstalled the driver, because the default windows driver is only designed to run the windows graphic user interface without using the advanced functionality of your card, then your card is less solicited. It's just a question of time. It could take days, weeks or maybe months... but your card is dying and with the default windows driver, you will be unable to launch a game or anything that require a good graphic card.
