I've got a Rock Xtreme 770 which has just developed a problem with the built in fingerprint scanner. Basically just stopped working - no hardware detected.

Rock's support have just said "reinstall vista", which strikes me as overkill and not that likely to work anyway.

    Any suggestions?

have you tried to just manually install the driver?
also, try going to Add Hardware and finding the scanner

Reinstalling Vista would probably do the trick, but it's also probably unnecessary.

Refresh the drivers. See if there are updates.
