Can anybody help?
I booted straight from the box. I make a habit of checking Device Manager to make sure that everything I asked for is registering on there.. just to check if I need to install any drivers.
I noticed that there was no wireless card listed in Device Manager. I tried loading the separately bundled Intel Pro Wireless driver disc and it told me the driver couldn't install because the device couldn't be found.
I got the latest 5300 driver from the intel website (ver 12.0.4.0) and loaded that onto the laptop from a USB stick. That installed. Still no wireless 5300 listed under Network devices in device manager.
Left it for a few minutes while I emailed Neil@Kobalt about it from this desktop. I opened device manager again just to torment myself... and now there's a 5300 recognised... along with an "unrecognised device".
However... the 5300 (and unrecognised device) has a yellow warning marker, so still not working. :S
Help??

have you checked to make sure the card is seated right.. its pretty easy to do. i would check that myself. then uninstall all cases of the 5300 drivers. reboot and try a reinstall at that point..could be many things at this point still
-
Would opening it void my warranty? I don't really know what I am looking for anyway.
-
Have you tried windows update yet it might fix the driver issues
-
Try Fn+F11
-
Try disabling and then enabling the wireless card
-
Done all those suggested things already.
-
Nothing in DevMgr to suggest it is there?
No "unknown" devices or "pci device" under system devices? -
Noob!
Phone the Kobalt brothers.
I'm quite sure you just having "know-how" problems, so don't worry ...
I'm sure is nothing serious.
Mine worked out of the box... I did download new drivers from the Intel Website though. Try those... Connect the laptop directly to your router (with a cable) and go from there.
Point is... don't panic! -
Milcs, I've done everything that everyone here has suggested already... before I asked for help.
EDIT: Only thing I haven't done is opned it up... bit scared of making something loose. -
Did you give them a call?
I'll give you a hand when I'm back home. I can even point you to the drivers on intel website.
Positive...Don't let such a thing detract from the rest.
EDIT: Oh, ok... just read all your post and finally got it. Can't really say what's going on there... but I'm pretty convinced is a software problem.
Did you try to uninstall the drivers for the wireless? Then go to device manager and right click on the wireless device (that is not being properly recognized) and go to properties. Choose to re-install the drivers and choose to choose the drivers yourself. Point it to the driver you donwloaded from intel and it should work...
If not, I don't really know what to say. -
Just doing a clean install of Vista again, since it comes with Service Pack 1 on the disc, I won't need to be connected to the internet yet to get further updates. Those can come later... just as soon as I get the wireless sorted. :S
-
dont worry cat, i had the same problem with it not connecting to my bt home hub. rang them up and they sorted it.
-
It isn't my ISP though. It is a problem inside the laptop.
I'm gutted now because the clean install erased my personal avatar (a Bass Clef) that was available on there before... I love playing Bass Guitar so I was amazed they had a Bass Clef on there to choose. Now it's gone. -
you can get that back cat its under control panel, user accounts, change picture at the top to get you note back
-
also i doubt you would void your warranty by checking the wifi card
-
*sigh* Why did Microsoft feel they needed another platform? XP was fine. Vista is doing my head in.
-
if there is anything in vista you have a problem with lmk i know vista very well im one of the few that actually prefer it to xp
-
Actually I had the same problem as you, I did a clean vista install because I wanted to put a different hdd inside. So I took out the HDD that came with the computer put mine in did the clean install, managed to get all the driver except for an unknown device and the wireless (which was thee but had an exclamation thingy). In the end I told vista to look for drivrs on the old HDD (since I had the original one in a usb adaptor) and eventually afer some minutes he found something that worked... Still can't figure out why it didn't work when I gave him the drivers though...In any case hang in there I'm sure there is nothing loose inside, is just a vista driver thing.
If it helps, the driver vista found was provided by intel, date 7/8/2008 version 12.0.0.82 -
ioaniro which driver are you running for the 5300? that might help out here
-
I've taken the latest one from Intel's site. As it's a clean Vista install, I'm hoping that the driver is accepted instead of it wanting to keep the old driver.
-
It's a bit daunting as well, because my Vista performance score is now showing as 1.0 when it used to be 5.0 (GPU was about 5.6 I think)... so as soon as I can install the Nvidia drivers things should be okay again. :S
-
And now a stuck pixel has appeared.!!!!!!!
-
its 1.0 because you need to run the performance test after installing all the drivers
-
-
Yeah, I did a thread post on here about that to help somebody who had the same probs. Unfortunately, they've never worked for me.
-
Why didn't you get Kobalt to install your OS? Might want to send it back for them to do that
Also, make more threads; it'll get stuff fixed faster! -
The OS was already pre-installed by them. I chose the clean install option when I re-installed. By that, I meant that I chose to have all files and drivers erased to start from scratch after the OS had loaded up.
