    Hey guys. I'm having some trouble with figuring out how to overclock my AMD Radeon HD 7970 2GB VRAM.

    Apparently, I can't overclock it with Afterburner? (Without opening my computer up)

    Does anyone know of an overclocking program that actually works with the 7970? I want to be able to control my fans and everything.

    Thanks so much.

    For fan controlling, theres no way to do it afaik on clevos. Dunno on AW, but on my MSI i can set the fan to kick in after a certain temp and i can choose the speed of it.
    However this doesnt really relate to gpu fan since MSI uses a single fan cooling system.

    On the possibility to OC your card, you should try MSI Afterburner 2.2.1. Newer/older versions arent able to OC the card.

    Here it is: http://download1.msi.com/files/downloads/uti_exe/vga/MSIAfterburnerSetup221.zip

    Install it but do not launch the program yet. Go into the program dir (C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner) and open the file MSIAfterburner.cfg with notepad.
    Search for these 2 values:

    UnofficialOverclockingEULA =
    UnofficialOverclockingMode = 0

    Set both to 1 like this:

    UnofficialOverclockingEULA = 1
    UnofficialOverclockingMode = 1

    Save the file and close it. Now launch MSI AB, a disclaimer window pops in, hit ok and now you should be able to OC your card.

    It says "Access Denied" when I try to save the notepad file. Any idea?

    check if its not read only. Right click-Proprieties.
    Also remember Msi AB shouldnt be running before making those edits.
    If this problem still occour, reboot, and try again.

    you have to change the whole afterburner folder and the cfg file permission to that administrator has the right to edit

    Im not using windows account control since its useless and it bugs me alot, maybe thats why.
    However if you have it enabled, you need to set Administrator privileges as littlecx said.

    right click on notepad.exe, select run as administrator, this will open notepad with admin privileges. Using that window browse to .cfg directory, select "view all files" and open it. Now it will let you save your changes.

    Or alternatively you can right click the file, go to security, select "users" group, click edit button and give yourself "modify" permissions.

    Well I was able to save the file but now when I open MSI AB, I can't move any of the bars? Core Voltage, Power Limit, and Fan are greyed out and Core Clock and Memory clock are stuck at 0? Help?

    you first open any game or 3dmark to trigger the 7970m, then open ab, otherwise it is not active

    Awesome! It worked!! Am I only supposed to be able to use Core Clock and Memory Clock? Those are the only ones usable. I tried turning the others on in the settings but it didn't fix the issue?
