I have a m570ru i purchased almost 4 years ago, with a 1920 x 1200 LCD. Just recently as i was playing a game a purple line appeared down my screen and was flickering for about 15 seconds and eventually stuck. The line is visible when i turn the computer even during the bios. I have ruled out my graphics card because i hooked it up to an external monitor and it seems to be fine. So i have narrowed it down to the cable or the LCD, what do you guys think? Whats the best way to approach fixing this?

It sounds like the ribbon cable has loosened, you will need to open the laptop and check it. If that's the case, re-seating it should fix the problem. If it's not a loose ribbon cable, then it might be a problem with the inverter.

It won't be the inverter, that just controls the backlight.

It could be the cable (try reseating both ends) otherwise your screen probably is the culprit.

You can get replacement WSXGA+ LCDs pretty cheap, like 60$.

Hi Lucky, sorry I missed your last question. Fortunately the thread got a bump :)

In my case the LCD didn't actually fail, just more thin vertical lines of different colours started to appear over time. The first line I got would disappear and then reappear at first, and then stayed on the screen after this. I can't remember, but I'm fairly sure that the second line didn't appear until a month later. After that the other 2 appeared pretty quickly. This process seemed random.

The LCD was still usable, and having one or two didn't bother me so much as they were at the side of the screen, and I have a 17" 1920 x 1200 screen so the lines seemed very thin.

I'm guessing if you leave it indefinitely the LCD will still work, but more lines will eventually keep showing up and can become quite distracting when playing a game, if it is in the middle.

There seem to be a lot of LCD screens for different laptop models on Ebay. The new screen I got as a replacement needed to be colour calibrated to get it right for my tastes.
