Yes, but the QX9300 costs like 900 dollars. Are there any other quad core CPUs than this one for laptops?

But GTA4 is a poorly optimized game. Why spend $700-$900 rather than wait for those fools to optimize the game?

I actually replayed Doom 3 this weekend on Veteran with 5.1 speakers

Its probably the real combat FPS I've been playing but that was easier than I remember. Oh. And I STILL think Sarge is the hardest boss.

They all have Quad-Cores. It's not all about Clevos, you know.

Sorry, I am very sleepy and I am most likely sleeptyping rubbish right now. I need to dump all my thoughts about this issue for you all before I fall asleep on my laptop. Anyway, here I go.

Let's look into it a little more closely. The eBay seller "extremeprocessor" states that only the notebooks listed on the page can support the quad core CPU. All of those notebooks are 17 inchers, with the exception of the one and only. Thats the obvious part. I am sure that the M860TU can tame the 44+W TDP quad core as scourge18a and many other users has shown that a X9100 can function stablely in the M860TU. The other detail here is that all the other notebooks listed have the ICH9M-E (E denoting enhanced) motherboard. The M860TU only bears the ICH9M. Now let's think back to the M570TU. It also had the ICH9M before Clevo "updated" the motherboard so that all production M570TU bear the ICH9M-E motherboard. By following this, two and two should come together and we can assume that the quad cores should work only in ICH9M-E motherboards. Though I could be wrong if there is a notebook that has the ICH9M motherboard with the quad core CPU. I know that I am missing another detail about the sockets being the same and the electrical pin-out. I think I remember reading about it in one of the stickies in this forum. I'm too sleepy to look for it again so I'll look into it again tomorrow. Lastly, we should also look into the BIOS as well. It shouldn't be difficult for Clevo to write the instruction code for quad cores.

    Good night.

Ya I say if you can get more power then get it.
Battery life I dont really notice since I have the X9100 but this thing is blazing fast, for normal vista usage there is no waiting for much of anything. And vista boots and is ready to surf the web in 34 seconds. I've optimized vista as much as i can (registry and such)

    http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/81176-speed-up-performance-vista.html
My only regret is not waiting the 2 weeks for the 160gb X25-m. I am sure the X25-E would be crazy fast but I spent more than enough money on this lappy already.

Speaking of quad-cores, how easy is it to change out the processor on these things (I'm thinking of the Sager 5797/M570TU). Is it just:

    1. unscrew the bottom
    2. remove the cooler/fan
    3. unseat the CPU
    4. seat a new one
    5. put on some paste
    6. put the cooler back
    7. screw it all back together

Or is it much more complicated than that?

Yeah that's pretty much it, but between 4 & 5, you need to clean the old paste off before applying the new layer.. I'll be finding out for sure when my T9800 comes.

They will never optimize the game. Trust me...it IS already optimized. The problem here is that it's ported from a console with 3 cores (Xbox 360) and since it's a pretty poor port, it requires a minimum of 3 cores from your PC to run decently. In other words, this game is optimized for a Xbox 360, not a PC.

If Rockstar were to optimize the game so that it requires fewer cores, that would probably mean they have to rewrite almost the entire game-engine.

There is a reason why the recommended requirements state that a Q6600 would be best.

Besides, it doesn't seem like Rockstar will release anymore patches for this game for PC.

I am taking the initiative now to get official confirmation from Clevo and Sager regarding quad core CPU's in the M860TU.

I just got off the phone with Sager and they have instructed me to send their engineer an email with the details. I have added all of the necessary details and links that were discussed in this thread as of this post and they expect to call and email me back within the next 24 hours. I will let all of you know the minute I get a yes or no from them, as well as reason why, the moment Sager returns my call or email.

your going to get an "official" no from them..lol even though everyone else is doing it. hahahaha. they are serious about that "thermal budget" stuff.

sager will email clevo. and clevo will tell them no and sager will come back with...the manufacture said no..... sure hope to be proven wrong on this!

but it's how they answered my bios update question regarding the extreme cpu with 3 unlocked multipliers.

Yes, I agree. I mentioned about the "thermal budget" issue that was announced by them, and I am expecting that if I get a no from them, they will shove the thermal budget back in my face. Sager knows that we have X9100's in our laptops and they are running just fine. I planned out this inquiry a little differently than others have done concerning the same issue, in which I cannot get into further detail as it may reveal the shortcoming of another user, and may be unlawful on my part. However, a good no is always a nice to refresh our memories nonetheless.

very true indeed. exactly why i did it with the np9262 bios. sager was willing to help, but clevo veto'd them. and the bios writers only do what they are told to do.

lets hope they have a change of heart after what...6 months to a year now.

But who is offering quads in the M860TU? I'd love to get confirmation that it can fit a quad core, because I've looked inside this thing, and I just don't see how the chip can fit. Or maybe I'm not correct on the size of the Quads.

From what I can find, only Clevo.fr is offering the M860TU with the Q9100 and the QX9300 on their config page. However, I cannot determine if their website is valid or up to date; trying to read and translate the page is already a hassle. Their forum seems to be somewhat active though, so it may be a good idea to drop them a question.

The chip size of the quad cores are identical to the dual cores with the only exception being that the quad cores have two dies.

Well, my main concern is whether the heatsink will completely fit flush over both dies.

Edit: Thanks John, I'll make a few PMs and phone calls. Man, I'm a few days from fulfilling my commitment to buy a T9800, and the thought of missing out on a quad core for a little bit more is quite chilling.

i have a freind who bought a qx9300 from ebay. he installed it into his 860 and he said it got very hot, the system shut down on him once, im not so sure the heatsink it ships with is capable of keeping up with the heat of the quad. but this is just what i was told. also with the 860 there is no bios overclocking so a 2.5 vs a near 3ghz chip imo i would go with the dual myself. i went quad with the ocz because i know i can oc it via the bios directly

also i know he applied the correct compound and made sure the sink was fluch he builds and oc's systems all the time ive known him for years, maybe the system that will ship with the quads may end up with a modded heatsink kinda like the one clevo switched to for the extreme model 570ru not sure. as i said i wish i had it in my hands to confirm but no way a quad is only a few dollars more. even the qs samples on ebay are 800$ vs 400 for the t9800 so you are more than 400$ difference between the two imo not worth it without the bios overclocking for the quad

    Hello zfactor.

Very intriguing. The CPU must really pack a wallop to bring the M860TU down like that. It might be that the heatpipe running across the center of the heatplate is between the two dies of the quad core reducing its ability to cool the CPU, whereas on a dual core CPU, the heatpipe is directly ontop of the die. It is disappointing still that Intel Extreme CPU's cannot be BIOS overclocked on this laptop. But overclocking aside, to hear of a functioning quad core in a M860TU gives hope, especially for those seeking the budget Q9000 over the expensive QX9300.

correct the extreme ones can not be oc'ed in the bios. and imo i would for sure take a t9800 over a q9000 you have a 2.0 vs almost 3ghz there... at that point the t9800 will perform better imo than the q9000, quad core (again imo) cant make up for almost 1ghz speed increase

I agree. I would also opt for the T9800 over the Q9000 as the T9800 will outrun the quad core in terms of raw power. Unfortunately, I can only dream of this dilemma; I am on a tight budget to replace my current Clevo.

In my case, I am split between the speed and efficiency of the P9600 or the potentially futureproof and versatile Q9000.

you might want to retract part this statement....because it certainly is not true.

if you do anything having to do with encoding and trans coding of files...quads are going to kill dual's even at 2.93 vs 2.5....but again...you get what you pay for.... you can buy a dual now then upgrade later of course. now with people all talking about i7's...you wont be able to upgrade to this, so you next step would be a quad...

and if you feel you want to run a dual core system, then limit the core usage off a four core chip and have at it. but 2009 is pretty much going to be a multi core year. and as more and more apps come out...they wont be limited to just 1 or 2 cores anymore.

as for the m860...you would be better off going with a speck dual core.. since they have a "thermal budget" (LOL. sorry, get a kick out of that everytime i say it) and what this really means is...if you look at your hwmonitor software and at that very first sensor reading (tmz0/tmpz/thz0) what ever it may be called on your system. this causes your system to over heat or give false over heating positives. it's a major pain in the butt if you ask me. the newer bios keeps this stupid sensor in check, but if not in check and you throw in an out of spec chip..instant over heating and down clocking issues....

I wonder if the heat sink I have is compatible with the quad? I thought the TDP of the qx9300 was 45 and mine in th x9100 is 44, you would think that it would be feasible as my temps ar very managable. I can keep my max temp under max load down to 60 C with my cooler and undervolt. It was usually maxxing out under 78 C without a cooler or undervolt.
I would sure be intrested in the quad if the heat was around the same as my x9100.
Has there been any news of newer CPU's (quads or duels) that would be compatible with the M860TU?
Will they develop any more GM45/PM45 CPU's or are they moving on to i7's and others?

Yes, the heatsink is compatible with the quad. Despite the QX9300 and the X9100 having nearly identical TDP's, the quads will run hotter with the current heatsink because the two dies on quad core are not directly under the heatpipe, as opposed to a single die dual core being right under the heatpipe, which results in less effective heat transfer. It may also have to do with the heatplate position being width-wise across the two dies rather than length-wise.

I don't think there are anymore moblile CPU's on Intel's roadmap other than the ones recently released. Intel will be moving on to the Nehalem CPU's under the Calpalla platform around winter 2009.

Small update from Clevo. It appears that Clevo has changed their notes on M860TU once again in the past hour. At the bottom of the page, they now state, "**Intel Core 2 Quad processor Q9000 can not run with nVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTX (VRAM: 512MB)."

GTX comes to question immediately. I am thinking that it is only a typo as the 9800M GTX only comes with 1GB VRAM, and also that the GTX was never supported in the laptop. I will safely assume that Clevo means the GT or GTS.

My thoughts are saying that the power draw from a quad core CPU and the 9800M GT/GTS may be too great for the system.

On a side note, Clevo has also updated the list of supported video cards. The 9800M GT has been removed from the list. But what caught my eye was the specs for the 9800M GTS. Clevo has listed the GTS to have 1GB VRAM; same with the 9800M GS.

Again, here is the link. http://www.clevo.com.tw/en/products/prodinfo_2.asp?productid=122

Now that's interesting, that the Q9000 is officially listed by Clevo, as it's officially listed 45W draw goes against the whole "thermal budget" fiasco. Hmm now I'll definitely investigate the Mobility 4850. I did just notice that they mistakenly marked the speed at 2.26Ghz 12MB L2, which is the Q9100's spec, whereas the Q9000 is a mere 2Ghz, 6MB L2 cache.

Also worth noting is the addition of the new line of Montevina Core 2 Duo chips; I wonder if resellers will just replace the current lineup, or if they'll add a few here and there.

well...like anything else with time....enough people proved that it could be done over time, so now they are ready to jump "partly onboard" since it's been "tested" in the field at no extra cost or time to them.

does that sum up part of it kevin?...lol
