I understand that the 5720's screen refreshes at 61Hz instead of the usual 60 and that this causes Battlefield 2 to crash back to the desktop, unless you alter some .ini file or something.

My question is - will I have a similar problem with most games? And if so, is there a standard procedure to get around it?

Can't understand why the display would be 61Hz in the first place.

I still play (don't laugh) Battlefield 1942 online with friends overseas. I want to continue doing so when I get my 5720. I'm worried now that it won't work?

Heh heh - wonder how the 7800GTX will handle the original Battlefield? My guess is that I'll still get stutters, since that **** game seemed to stutter no matter WHAT specs you threw at it.

The gameplay sure does beat Battlefield 2 though!

Yeah, it is an odd resolution.

I have been reading about it - it appears that BF2 is the only game to far to have a problem.

BF1942 will be just fine on your laptop - as a matter of fact, it will be more than fine. You'll be able to run at the maximum possible settings and resolution. :) Let us know how it works out.

    Excellent news!

Funny, I prefer the first Battlefield, and also the first Call of Duty...

    Call me old fashioned!

First Call of Duty rocks - although I have the second one, I still play the original too because it is simply a great gaming experience. The gameplay didn't change much in the second one, which says that the first one was near perfect.

How does the 5720/5320 stand up to single player gaming? My old Averatec with its 3.0GHz Pentium 4 and Radeon 9600 64MB played Call of Duty great online, but single player was a little jerky.

Mind you, I have the Audigy card now, which I'm presuming will make a difference. COD used to freeze up for a second during large explosions. And my 5720 will have 2 gigs of RAM....

I've never had any problems with CoD on any of my machines. Even my previous HP, which had an Athlon 64 3400+ and a 64MB MX 440 ran it at maximum with no issues. I had 1GB of RAM.

LCD screens don't refresh like CRTs. Feel free to set it to whatever Hz you want.

I'm not so sure about that. Doesn't sound safe. Have you tried it cerhat?

I found this on another post somewhere. It allows you to set the refresh rate in directX. Hope this helps.

    Start -> Run -> dxdiag

"More help" tab, "override" button, 61 in the editbox.

The closest thing to a refresh rate an LCD has is called 'response time'. The lower the number, the better the LCD. 20-25ms used to be considered good, now I think 16ms is standard. Instead of flickering on a CRT, you will see blurriness on an LCD, but that is all but unheard of with moder LCD screens.

That's not very fair. Regardless of whether it's a different technology or not, it doesn't sound safe to crank the "refresh rate" up unusually high.

More on topic, here's a neat link http://www.necdisplay.com/support/css/monitortechguide/index04.htm -- last paragraph in the "refresh rate" section says a lot.

I edited that out, we don't need comments like that.

I know that CRT's uses different refresh rates, and LCD's have response times. Forcing the LCD to do something that it is not intended to do doesn't exactly seem 'safe'. I also don't want to have people reading this do anything wrong.

Even though you can't possibly damage the LCD by changing the refresh rate? Ok. You're the mod.

That's right, I am. So be careful.

This is a site where we discuss notebooks + share comments, so if you have something useful to post, then do so, otherwise, stick to the off topic. All I wanted was an explanation. I'm sure other people were wondering the same question.
