I'm thinking of getting this model from Kobalt's spread, but I'm curious as to the specifications. According to Kobalt's site it has a wireless N card built in and an Expresscard 34 slot. Is this confirmed? I have an older model Creative X-Fi audio card and it will be a shame if the G890 only has the 34 slot since my card won't be compatible. Compared to my existing Vostro, how does the wireless N card compare to the older AGN intel wireless cards sold 3 years ago?

lol just had to say it..
Anyway, the 802.11N's technical speed is 600Mbits, while G is 54Mbits. So yeah although you probably can't achieve the maximum, it's still much faster than G.

If you're going to use Japanese, at least get it right. The hiragana is mistyped.

Back on topic, thanks for the info on the wireless. At least I won't have any worries using the family's wireless connection.

According to your picture, your soundcard is exactly the same as mine. That essentially shafts me if I get the G890 since that model definitely only houses a 34 slot meaning my card (and yours for that matter) will not fit. I suppose I'll either rely on integrated audio for the G890 or "upgrade" to the 34-slot Creative X-Fi notebook.

Edit: Anyone owning the G890 like to comment on the screen? Elsewhere one review and a few users on the forum on the Toshiba 18.4" model have marked down the poor brightness and extreme tendency for glare on the screen despite the high native resolution. Is it really as bad as they say?

im sure it should work as when kobalt had the world exclusive release of this model they also sold that x-fi card as an option. theve now changed to the newer x-fi card.
ill post a link to it in a while as at work and cant use tabs so have to save then go to other website and then edit. doh!
you could also try the kobalt forum where there are lots of owners of the g890

this is the model of x-fi card they sell as an option now http://uk.store.creative.com/products/product.aspx?catid=1&pid=17988

My current X-Fi card is actually the predecessor of the card you've linked in your post. I don't mind getting it since EAX 4.0 really is worth it with decent speakers. However I'm weighing up my options since I'm not sure if the new x-fi card suffers from the same gimping as my current card hardware-wise.

The Expresscard format may be on its way out but it's a bit annoying that the G890 only supports the smaller 34 format cards. Just as well the USB3.0 ports make up for compatibility issues somewhat.

    Hi

Just to confirm that the slot is only Expresscard 34 (as per the specification page on our website), NOT the 34/54 version on some older models. The newer mobile Sound Blaster models are 34 so they'll work fine, just the 54 slot models that'll be a problem.

Also the WIFI card is an Intel 6300 - I use one at home and I actually get the same download speeds through WIFI that I do through a hardline i.e. the WIFI capability is higher than the actual speed of my 10Mb broadband connection :D

Thanks for the reply. Now to look into whether the newer card is a worthwhile card compared to the integrated card. Would it be too much to update the Kobalt website with specs on the new card?

The new Wi-Fi card sounds like a beast, I might need to use its feature a lot if I travel and a reliably fast connection works wonders.
