I know the Sager NP2096 has the ctrl and function key switched....why on earth would they ever do something like that? Are all sagers like that? Im looking to spend about 1000$-1200$ on a laptop in a few weeks, and so far im split between a sager, dv5t, or an asus from newegg.

If nothing can be done about the key theres no way I can get it. I was a big WoW player (might be moving on to warhammer or just waiting for WotLK) and I used ctrl all the time.

Uh? Am I the only one used to having the Fn key after the Ctrl?

there are several laptops that have the fn button in the far left unfortunately. solution... game with an external monitor/mouse/keyboard :) plus dual monitor = awesomeness, i actually find it useful for working more efficiently.

but yeah if i were to game on my laptop by itself id be pissed off with the fn ctrl setup. hardcore fps gamer = lots of ctrl. keeps me from gaming when i shouldnt be :)

Eh...I'm used to have the Ctrl key at the beginning during gaming.

And if you think that's weird, check this keyboard :p

I FAR prefer having the fn key second, this means that I can locate my little finger onto the ctrl key easily. On my old laptop, I used to try to press ctrl and end up pressing fn, and not getting the result I was expecting. The ctrl key is on the bottom left of a desktop keyboard, why should it be different on a laptop. I use the fn key far less than ctrl, and it's not a key I need to be able to press without looking

I never got this debate before because I am accustomed to the Ctrl being first and then the FN key from my toshiba laptop.

The NP2096 has the Fn key first because it is built from the Compal JHL90 barebones, and I believe all Compals have the Fn key first. The other Sagers built from the Clevo barebones have the Ctrl key first, the way that it should be.

As a desktop person who plays/played Counterstrike, the Ctrl key is the 4th most important key to me, after W, A, and D. So in my search for a notebook, I've ruled out anything without the Ctrl key in the correct spot, since I'm not a contortionist and wouldn't be able to game comfortably.

I'm used to this too; I think dells keep this configuration as well. The M860TU's keyboard looks normal (except for the stupid windows key) in this regard. The delete button moving to the top right is the button I have issues with :(

Just remap the key, either in windows (external program like remapkey) or in WoW (haven't checked, but should be possible) or use an external keyboard.

In Call of Duty or Battlefield, the nade button is even more important than the left-click :D

What are you guys going on about... The Ctrl should come first and then the function key. It's like that on my old acer, on my housemates Dell XPS M1530 and Inspiron something, on my old m15x, on my partner's Sony Vaio.

So... what is this thing about a key being swaped? It's exactly the way it should be... Or at least, I'm used to! :)

I far prefer to use a proper mouse. My lappie pretty much lives on an NC2000 on my desk attached to an external mouse, second screen, printer, x-fi xtrema audio notebook and 7.1 surround sound system. I only use the TP when out and about and it spends most of its life disabled so I don't keep hitting it accidentally.

What is the key used for exactly? Is remapping it possible?

Im pretty sure you cant bind it in WoW, and definetly not going to be able to use it as a modifier which everyone does. (ctrl+3 ctrl+t etc.)

And im planning on using an external keyboard most of the time, but when im not i'll be hitting fn by accident all the time.

/sigh such a dumb reason not to get a laptop but oh well

If you usually use an external keyboard, any clevo laptop should be fine for you as the ctrl key is bottom left (where it should be...)

Just read this on another forum

"Many laptops have a "Swap FN and CTRL" option in the BIOS. Take a look."

    True?

I got all confused with this thread and went and checked... and the 2096's images have Fn and then Ctrl, so the OP's complaint is legitimate. I'm not sure about MrDJ's reversed M860TU (does his have Fn and then Ctrl, as you go to the right? or does he have *3* other laptops that have Fn in the wrong/nonstandard place?) My M860TU looks normal. Ctrl on the bottom left hand corner.

You might also be able to remap them using AutoHotKey

Which were? Buy a different laptop or use an external keyboard?

Im pretty sure it cant just be remapped using autohotkey for some complicated reason. Something with the way it processes fn keypresses.

hmm... if youre that hardcore about cs you should be playing with a crt monitor anyways, so really external keyboard would be much easier to deal with. i would also argue that crouching is much less important in cs than say the battlefield series :p

i kind of like having the fn key where the ctrl key is supposed to be, it keeps me from playing games when im not hooked up to my keyboard/mouse/monitor, which is basically when im off working somewhere.

I'm not much of a CS player any more, but I used to play 1.6 socially for laughs by playing with my buddy sitting next to me. Definitely not hardcore, I was happy if I scored better than 1:1, but it was fun nevertheless. We also used to come to work on public holidays, and once the boss left in the afternoon, we walked to the net cafe and played BF1942 with a postdoc from another lab for a few hours. That fellow was definitely a nade spammer, and he racked up a ton of kills.

I'm finding myself with less time to play these days, but I still dabble in Crysis (SP), DoD, America's Army. I still find myself popping up and down like a gopher from behind objects, especially in DoD when I've got the sniper rifle and am in the process of chambering another round. So yeah, I wish that we could just buy new keyboards and swap them out. I have no issues with carrying a desktop mouse around, but I draw the line at carrying a keyboard. Unfortuntately, that means the NP2096 or MSI-1651 are out of the picture for me.
